    Milan sign Onyewu
    Tuesday 7 July, 2009

Milan have made American centre-back Oguchi Onyewu their first signing of the summer amid protests from the fans.

The 27-year-old of Nigerian origin who also just happens to have a Belgian passport, has left Standard Liege and put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

Onyewu came to Milan's attention at the Confederations Cup where the USA reached the Final only to be beaten by Brazil.

He has also played for Newcastle and Metz.

The signing might placate Milan's fans, who gathered at the club's training ground yesterday to protest against the Rossoneri's lack of activity in the transfer market.

    Why fucking Milan, Gooch? :(
That awesome. Good for the Gooch. Though I'd rather he went to Genoa or Napoli.

The move should turn him into an even better defender.

Hopefully he gets enough time and does well before the World Cup.

If he has a horrible first season, I'm going to be worried about him for SA.

    Well you're a Juve fan.

At the same time you can't blame Onyewu for striking the iron with Milan. That's a once in a lifetime opportunity for an American player.
I just read the news. I can't blame Onyewu. As you say it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. But he will not be good enough. Fulham, that's where he should have gone. Milan is just ridiculous. This is good news for us Juventus fans, because Onyewu can be fantastic, but he can't be consistent for an entire season.

He's not an EPL defender. He tried that once. I think he would be fine at a team like Genoa or Palermo. He might do alright at Milan, all I care about is that this is going to help him for the NT.

It is going to help him. That much is true. But I really, really doubt he'll be good enough. He's not even the best defender in Belgium. It's a weird move to say the least and I bet the d'Onofrios are the reason it happened. You're right. Genoa would have been a very good move for Onyewu. That said, this is good for the Belgian league too if Onyewu does well in Milan.

Indeed, there are some very good players coming out of that league.

Who would you say is the best defender in the Belgian league? I'm just curious.
