With Torino promoted and Juventus dropping into Serie B for the first time, Granata President Umberto Cairo is enjoying being top dog in Turin.

“We earned our place in Serie A on the field and Juve lost it outside, but I’d prefer not to say anything more on the subject,” said the patron after the Calciopoli verdicts demoted the Bianconeri plus a 17-point penalty.

“I am happy about Torino being in the top flight, although we do miss having the local derby. I hope we’ll be able to play Juventus next year – in Serie A, of course.”

Toro’s arrival following a dramatic play-off win over Mantova was all the more surprising considering this time last year the club didn’t even exist.

The bankruptcy of the previous administration saw the side robbed of its promotion and forced to start from scratch under new ownership.

“In mid-August I decided on our technical staff, after the 20th we brought in the players and on the 27th we made our Serie B debut. We started out without headquarters, workers, footballs or team jerseys. The promotion this summer wasn’t just a miracle – it was more than that.”

The Granata have gone through many tough times over the past few years, but finally seem to have built a club worthy of its grand history.

“Today Torino is an outfit that employs 50 people, apart from the players, and is beginning to create a network of scouts to bring in more talented stars of the future. Last year, we also had the seventh highest attendance figures in Italy, even in Serie B.”

The new boys have already made some important signings this summer, including World Cup winning midfielder Simone Barone, ex-Milan and Juventus goalkeeper Christian Abbiati and Fiorentina defender Giuseppe Pancaro.

“We are still missing a striker and, perhaps, a couple of defenders,” added Cairo. “I have already said that this season simply surviving in Serie A is not enough. I want to achieve more.”

It’s a year of big changes off the field as well, with the Delle Alpi under reconstruction and a move to the old Stadio Comunale, now revamped and used for the recent Winter Olympics.

“It’s too small a stadium for Torino, as last year we had 19,000 season ticket holders in Serie B. Someone has to explain to me why a large city like Turin should have only the 24th biggest capacity football arena in Italy. I believe we should use the Delle Alpi for the top games, obviously paying rent to Juventus, who now own the structure.”

What a bunch of cocks. :disagree: I say we kick their ass in Seria next year and they relegate to Serie B. May they all burn in hell the lot of them! :D

Their president hasnt really said bad stuff about Juve, so in consideration the thread title doesnt mean much and proberly comes from a distorted torino fan who didnt realise his side has been in the dumps for decades and are nothing more than a side I hope will flop next year. So what if they have pancaro, barone or abbiatti, it doesnt mean much infact if anything atalanta and other small teams are equally as good.

If they want to rent the delle alpi, considering nothing has been done (in terms of restructuring it), then I think we should agree and should try to rip their asses off so they end up getting bankrupt again :D

its a shame we wont be playing the derby, i hope we get them in the coppa....anyway on their part they r doing some positive moves and they have a good coach. I think they will survive the drop, but their president shouldn't think over that as it would be hard.

And we r still the kings of town and we will prove it, even if its from beyond the grave :D

The lack of a derby robs both sets of fans.

I enjoy defeating Torino. But I have nothing against the granata. I hope our cross-town rivals (well, I guess they aren't this season!) do some damage in Serie A until we get back there. ;)

Boing. And there's why Juve will never be Turin's #1 team.

Oh please.. what twaddle... They had the 7th highest attendances in italy.. so what... That figure was still 6k less than ours.
And less it has been for all but 2 of the past 60 years...

How exactly do you lot come to the conclusion that turin is a granata city... Its utter bullshit... Turin in general is actually fairly equally split... Though latest recorded polls have Juve a fair way in front.

They have had higher average attendances than us twice in 60 years... Their average over recorded history is just over half of what our attendances are...

Maybe some of you should try actually walking the streets of turin and gauging public opinion... In the 30 odd years i have either been regularly visiting or living in turin, not once have i had the impression of the majority of its citizens being toro... Its jus a common myth... Generally built from people that have never even set foot in the city.

So what, other than a whisper of no source, an urban myth if you like, are you all basing this rubbish on... What have you to back this crap up... All the figures are against you... So what is the basis of this crap...

As for the original post, Cairo never said anything bad about Juve... In contrast he has actually been very supportive of Juve in recent weeks and is genuinely dissapointed not to have the possibility of the derby... Hes a good man.

I have walked the streets of Turin and found greater enthusiasm for Torino than I ever did for Juventus barring in the odd pub during matches. Now I suppose it could have been that I found myself predominantly in the part of town and its pubs, bars, restaurants and theatres where most of Torino's supporters live. That still wouldn't change the experiences I had the times I was in Turin.
