We've never really talked about it though, so you can't tell what someone is thinking just based on a short comment here and there.
But it's only natural to be worried. If you grab a map of Europe from before the WW1, there's nothing called Poland. That's because in the late 18th century our three powerful neighbors Germany, Russia and Austria decided to divide up the country and take a slice each. For over 100 years there was no Polish state. Incidentally, that's why we fought with Napoleon cause he promised to reinstate the country (desperate times...), and he did, but it was short lived.
So we were completely screwed, but in 1918 we got a country again. Then came WW2 and 50 years under Soviet rule. No wonder we felt immense urgency to join NATO at the first opportunity after 1991.
So I get where you're coming from.
