Del Piero IS NOT Juventus.
++ [ originally posted by Seven ] ++
Perhaps, but fact remains: in games like the one against Real we need Alessandro Del Piero, because Del Piero is our star, our hero. Not Nedved, not Zambrotta, not Buffon, but DEL PIERO. And then he chokes in the final. But in the semis he's great.

And though he chokes and some of us pretend to hate him we actually all adore him. There's something special about him and we just need him. I'm not saying Del Piero is Juventus, but Del Piero is this generation of Juventus.
That's all I have to say about this subject.

That generation of Juventus is over, or at least it should be.

Time for new blood. Del Piero was nowhere to be found in the first game against Real, and he was by no means the best player in the return leg. Zambrotta was immense, Buffon scored a penalty, Trezeguet scored 2 goals in those 2 matches, Nedved was our midfield engine, davids was fantastic... Del Piero just scored one goal, didnt do much else. True, it was a great goal, but to say that we beat Real just because of him, or that he was the main player is sheer stupidity.

it is interesting how juve have always sold their big stars mercilessly to whichever club can pay us the most, but why not del piero?especially since he has been doing worse in previous years than ravanelli, zidane, baggio or vialli ever have?

it really shows his status in the club.a decade down the road we might never see another one-team player like del piero in a club as big and famous as juve.

Del Piero was Italy's playmaker against Wales. Result: a great game for DP and a 4-0 victory for Italy.
I know and that's great, but that was not my point. I was simply wondering why none of our Juve coaches (Lippi and now Capello) have played him in that role..

I have to say I am sick and tired of the reponses people get on this forum just because they criticise Del Piero in some way. People whining on that DP is our hero and that if you say anything negative about him then you must hate him and are forgetting the things he has done for Juve. It is absolute crap.

If someone criticises Del Piero, it is usually because they feel they have a reason to do so - we don't then need a whole bunch of posts saying DP won us the Scudetto single handedly in the past and that anyone criticising DP should remember 'he is Juve'.

He might be Juve to you, but I remember Juve without DP and I will support a Juve in the future without DP, so to keep using this statement in a forum that exists to allow thoughtful and mature 'discussion' is defeating the object.

If you disagree then fair enough, but at least put forward a meaningful argument or at least try and see it from the other person's point of view and respond accordingly. Just don't start with the 'anti-DP' accusations.........all the time.

Hmmm... Remember Trezeguet only scored in the first leg thanks to Del Piero. And IMO Del Piero was great in the second leg. Perhaps not as good as Nedved, but he sure was one of our best players in that game. And IIRC we wouldn't have gone through if not for Del Piero's goal.

Because Del Piero keeps on stating he's a striker and not a playmaker. To hell with Del Piero's opinion, just play him there whatever he says!

If you honestly do believe Juventus would have won those scudetti without Del Piero you're quite blind. Or perhaps Del Piero wasn't even the reason for Juventus being in the 1996, 1997 and 1998 CL final.
1996.1997.1998. I think Vialli, Ravanelli and Baggio also made us win the Scudetti and Champions League during and before that time. Why dont we bring them all back as well? Now you'll stop smoking whatever you are, and realize that the point im trying to make is, that past glories shouldnt come in the way of future success. That process, is known as evolution.

Well, I never started with them and I believe I did post something with sense about Del Piero. I believe we still need Del Piero. But I do think we should get a new no.10. No one in our current squad can fill Del Piero's shoes, not even Zlatan. Remember where Del Piero was at Zlatan's age: he was the best player in the world, Zlatan obviously isn't.

We need someone like Cassano, who still is a hell of a lot better than Zlatan.

Oh really? I would check if they were even there at that time, Baggio. They were at 1996 though, but I was referring to DP's freekick against Real Madrid that year.

It's quite strange though that DP sees himself as a striker, because he obviously lacks that eye for the goal.

It's not if it wasn't DP's goal. If it wasn't Neddy's goal, we would've played ETs too. ;)

I know, we all know. But he used to have that eye for goal. And I think, deep inside him, he still wants to be the player he was. But he's different now, obviously not so good anymore, but still valuable as a PLAYMAKER.

You're right about that. But that shouldn't have anything to do with his game. He should be able to take those free kicks even if he were 45. It's all about confidence I guess.
