Luciano Spalletti 2001-2001, 2002-2004
In his first short term at the club Spalletti did what he had to do. He told Jørgensen that he couldn’t play unless 100% fit, he reinstalled some discipline, and he re-enforced the tactical training to a point where Jørgensen was bored to death – but it worked. The club was saved from a threatening relegation. Spalletti however didn’t get a contract for the following season, since the Udinese board preferred Roy Hodgson, who had just made Danish champions out of FC Copenhagen for the first time in eight years. In true Italian fashion Spalletti was to be found on the bench again a year later.
Spalletti started the 2002 season off by sending the squad on three week training ritiro in Austria during which they were allowed the grand total of two afternoons off. For every minute a player was late for a session he had to pay ten Euros and if it happened three times, even with one single minute, the player had to serve an hour of detention in Spalletti’s office – every day for a week.
Spalletti took the stereo in the changing room down piece by piece in front of the puzzled players. The players didn’t get to ask why before the coach answered “Here there will be silence”. Generally the strict working ethics earned Spalletti the respect of the players and Jørgensen has nothing bad to say about him. The squad improved and Udinese qualified for Europe.
