Mourinho on 4-3-3

Look, if I have a triangle in midfield – Claude Makelele behind and two others just
in front – I will always have an advantage against a pure 4-4-2 where the central
midfielders are side by side. That’s because I will always have an extra man. It
starts with Makelele, who is between the lines. If nobody comes to him he can see
the whole pitch and has time. If he gets closed down it means one of the two other
central midfielders is open. If they are closed down and the other team’s wingers
come inside to help, it means there is space now for us on the flank, either for our
own wingers or for our full-backs. There is nothing a pure 4-4-2 can do to stop
things".
Completely right, and that's why the 4-3-3 is the better formation than the 4-4-2. The latter is limited and at times too static.

Tomorrow's TS and GdS mention Agüero or Tevez and also add Dzeho to the mix. Gazz mention Hazard and Banega interest from the merdazzurri.
TS say Bastos for sure if 2 non-EU rule or wait till he gets a French passport.
TS Melo and Aquilani exit. After Pirlo and Pazienza Juve think about Monto and Lass. Denilson new name linked.
TS Tardelli: Juve need an Essien with Pirlo. Tacchinardi: Pirlo will have to adapt to Conte's formation.
    GdS add Rolando + Cassani/Licht.

It all depends on how they're interpreted.

4-4-2 can have advantages over 4-3-3. 4-4-2 can have a spare man at the back (4-3-3 usually only has 1 real forward), and can double up on the opposition full backs (if the wide players in the 4-3-3 don't track back).

Having 3 midfielders is usually an advantage these days though.

Uhh, well that's the problem, isn't it? Even with Essien we'll still be exposed in the center of the pitch with 32 year-old Pirlo roaming around. If we actually use the Conte system proposed in the Conte thread, I just don't see how this is going to work. We may wow the crowd with attacking football but I don't understand how we'll keep the goals out. The system will need defensive fullbacks, so I'm worried that Conte might be tempted to use a CB back there, like Bonucci at RB or... f#$%^@g Chiellini at left-back.

Mourinho's 4-3-3 would even turn into a 4-5-1 with Eto'o and Pandev. That's how they managed to win the CL, through their flexibility. The Italian 4-4-2 is just like plopping Sepp Blatter on the pitch.

That is what annoys me. No one expects the coach to be flexible but rather the players to be flexible. The best managers are those who are able to change the formation to suit the players they have.

I heard he claims he used to play football and once scored something like 40 goals in a season. That's like when Kim Jong Il said he got 5 holes in one the first time he ever played golf.

Unfortunately a lot of Italian managers have the narrow-minded approach to footballing.

    Pretty much.
