the 442 does not have to be as rigid as the one we are playing...I can easily someone like Seba playing as a LMF, but with a free role...but of course we need to sign better fullbacks for that

With these players, no. We need pace in a trident and none of Amauri, Trez or DP have that. Wouldn't suit us with these players.

It's Amauri or Trezeguet, Del Piero or Cassano.
Did Vialli, Ravanelli and Del Piero have a lot of pace? They had some, but nothing out of this world.

Amauri, Cassano and Giovinco would do the trick. Then by bringing in Iaquinta you have another option if we need more pace.

The straight 4-4-2 is part of our problem, IMO.

The straight 4-4-2 is very bland and predictable but this is after all Ranieri. For any of the formation changes we're likely to make we'll definitely need new fullbacks. At the very least and good solid RB and recall Criscito now that he has a lot more experience.

We'll still need someone to dictate play and control the tempo though...

It was a different type of football then. The model for 4-3-3 today is Barcelona and it's all pace-pace-pace, with extraordinary skill of course. We couldn't pull it off with DP/Amauri/Cassano in my opinion. Giovinco/Amauri/Cassano would be another thing.

Still, what I wrote would be much more balanced I think. The formation isn't the problem, it's the players and lack of general quality, not to mention squad depth. No formation in the world will make a difference if the players aren't up to it and what we have is not for 4-3-3.

Trident up front? They'll work.
Del Piero won't work in trident. It was obvious with Italy and it's pretty clear in Juventus. The man himself said that he doesn't want to play on the left side of a 3 men attack.
Absolutely.

He wouldn't have to play strictly on the left-side. I sort of envisage the three front runners having free roles up top, allowing them to maximize their creativity.

As somebody already stated above, the straight 4-4-2 is too predictable and static. That's why I don't like it.

It would be much, much different if we were Manure United and could field Ronaldo and Nani, fast and skillful wingers to terrorize the defense, but we don't have players like that. Camoranesi isn't like them and Giovinco is better behind the strikers, not on the left.

Perhaps if we get somebody such as Silva or Ribery it would work out better.

Yes, it's predictable and static when you have dead wood in the middle. Put someone dynamic and technically capable alongside Sissoko and with Camo and another solid winger(perhaps Giovinco), the concept changes completely.

Giovinco can work on the left. He doesn't have to be a typical winger, he can roam free, cut in the middle, switch sides, etc.

Our main problem is the big hole in the middle and I think you agree there with me. It was a problem with Capello even, but with such a defense and attack we compensated it.

No,no,no. Never-mind :D
Modric there is no way I would choose Modric over Diego and they will both be going at the same price.
You're from England so you should know out of everyone what Luka can do :lol2:
I would. In a blink of an eye.

Modric is a very good player, unfortuantly he has a tendency to drift out of games. It probably doesen't help his cause with the other 10 players around him being relativly poor. I for one am not doubting Modric but I have my reservations.

See that's exactly how I feel about Diego.
