Milan may still play European football next season, despite yesterday’s Calciopoli verdict.

The Rossoneri will see 44 points deducted from last term’s total, denying them a place in the Champions League.

However, even with this penalty, the Diavoli find themselves only one place short of UEFA Cup qualification, and may now find a way into the competition at the expense of Empoli.

While Livorno and Parma are set to take advantage of the misfortune of Serie A’s most illustrious clubs, Tuscan minnows Empoli don’t yet have the necessary licence to enter the UEFA Cup. Should the Azzurri fail to receive permission to enter, Milan would be the next club in line.

As things stand, Inter and Roma will go straight into the Champions League group stages, while Palermo and Chievo will enter the preliminary round.

Juventus were relegated to Serie B with a 30-point deduction, Fiorentina and Lazio were also sent to the Second Division with penalties of 12 and seven points respectively.

Milan were deemed to be the least guilty side, but still face the prospect of starting next season in Serie A with minus 15 points. All clubs are due to appeal.

Three of the major players in the Calciopoli scandal have spoken out against the punishments imposed upon them.

Luciano Moggi (pictured), the man at the centre of the scandal, has maintained that despite Juventus’ guilt, no matches were fixed.

“All the results were earned on the pitch,” claimed the outfit’s former director general. “I’m disappointed by the verdict, not for my sake but for the fans who have been cheated by it.”

Lazio President Claudio Lotito – banned from football for three years – claimed that he was surprised by the decision to banish the Biancocelesti to Serie B, but was adamant that he would do everything in his power to reverse the verdict.

“We weren’t expecting this kind of sentence as we never thought we were violating any moral code,” explained the much-maligned chief.

“We will do everything we can to defend our club, we will go to every court even the European Courts of Justice.”

Fiorentina honorary President Diego Della Valle admitted that he was stunned by the harsh sentence imposed on the Viola that sent the Gigliati into the Second Division with a 12-point penalty.

“I don’t even want to think about what happens if the appeal fails,” said the shoe baron who has also been suspended for four years.

“We’re preparing the appeal so that we have facts rather than words to defend us.”

Relegation to the lower Leagues would be a heartbreaking déjà vu for the Viola fans who saw their side collapse five years ago due to financial problems and reform in Serie C.

a licence of some sort



"At this time, Empoli do not have a licence to play in the Uefa Cup, having failed to request it and, therefore, they cannot participate in a European competition,"
read a statement on Milan's official website.

"The time frame to request a licence has already expired, hence for AC Milan there is the possibility to play in the 2006/07 Uefa Cup."

The whole idea that Milan play in UEFA is a joke. They reducted their points for a reason, for the reason not to play. The punishment is not playing in europe, not being reduced 44 points... so Milan won't play in europe, don't worry. It's a media who can't understand BASIC LAW. The verdict will simply be corrected.

according to sky sports last night the italian fa FIFA and UEFA had a meeting during the world cup. the result of this meeting it was agreed that the first verdict would be the one that italy's european teams would be decided. no appeal can get any of the four teams back in europe, no wrangling can get any of the four teams back in europe, no hope for tehm at all when it says suspended from european football it means suspension from ALL european football
