A victory on the pitch, passage to the next round and topping Group E. It was a great Wednesday for Juventus in Donetsk as they punched their ticket for the round of 16 in the Champions League, thanks to a masterful showing against Shakhtar.
The 1-0 win earned against Lucescu’s team was truly the passing of a final exam with the highest possible marks. Most of all for the domineering way in which Pirlo and his team-mates were able to get it. The post-match statistics also bear this out.
Shakhtar were able to maintain more ball possession (55% to 45%) and earn more corner kicks (7 to 2), but Juventus had the edge in other key areas of the match. Standing out among them was the number of attempts: 15 to 11 (4-5 on target). Regarding the number of attacks, the Bianconeri boasted 38 as opposed to 29 for the home team.
The numbers do justice and give even more value to a feat that no other team has managed to pull off this season; that is to say, winning at the Donbass Arena. In the Champions League both Chelsea and Nordsjaelland suffered losses there, and in domestic competition Shakhtar have been overwhelmingly dominant.
