Genoa have enjoyed mixed fortunes in their first two Serie A games of the 2012/13 season – beginning the campaign with a 2-0 home success over Cagliari before dipping 3-2 in an end-to-end tussle with Catania.
The opening encounter against the Rossoblu proved to be a relatively comfortable affair for Luigi De Canio’s men.
After Jorquera squandered an opportunity to put the hosts ahead from the spot, they finally broke the deadlock six minutes into the second period when Merkel stabbed home from close range.
The points were made safe when Immobile, currently on a co-ownership deal from Juventus, capped his debut with a 25-yard strike in the closing stages.
Genoa then travelled to Catania for an absorbing clash at the Angelo Massimino.
Kucka gave the visitors a first-half lead against the run of play, collecting Immobile’s fine assist before slotting past Andújar.
The Etnei upped the pressure in the second half and got the equaliser their efforts merited when Bergessio found the bottom corner with 66 minutes on the clock. One soon became two as the Argentinean frontman doubled his tally 120 seconds later.
Jankovic’s long-range effort with eight minutes remaining looked to have secured a point for the visitors, only for Lodi to lash home a free-kick and secure a 3-2 success.
