The history of the German language is pretty linear, English definitely isn't. You can blame conquest on top of conquest, both as a recipient and deliverer, as the main reason for that. In many cases we simply didn't change the spelling of loaned or stolen words in the way other languages did, but simply changed the phonology of it. In other cases words were changed by European scribes. It's a real mess but at least it's interesting.
