If you look at how that ad was designed, I don't think they so much did a lot of hard thinking about how to make it useful. Rather it was "hey look, noone thought of this yet, here's how we make some easy money".

Yes, but usually you're somehow tricked into believing it would come in handy. This on the other hand actually completely foregoes the function it might have. He designed something that is actually worse than not doing anything at all

Classic mistaken assumption. People who know something about wine will not buy this. That leaves how many percent of the population? 30%? 50%? Who knows. But plenty of people still left in that group.
Btw notice how this was not marketed in France or Italy..
