One of the most dangerous sports in the world isnt it?

#9.
Hurling

Where: Ireland.

What is it?
An Irish sport which appears to be a hybrid of field hockey, soccer, football and unremitting, pants-wetting terror.

The game is played with axe-like sticks called hurleys or "camáns" and a small, hard ball. Two teams, each with 15 Irishmen of questionable mental stability attempt to score goals by smacking the ball as hard as possible, at head height and at terrifying speeds.

Origins:
Hurling' origins are based on some kind of energetic outdoor activity participated in by ancient Gaels that most people refer to as 'warfare.' When the Irish began to migrate overseas, they attempted to set up hurling leagues in their adopted countries, but everyone else was too frightened and/or mentally stable to play.

Interesting fact:
Although a well-hit ball can travel at speeds of almost 100 miles per hour, hurling players wear no protective gear. Players can choose to wear a helmet, but many choose not to, figuring if God had wanted men to wear helmets, he wouldn't have given them those ball-deflecting skulls.

John?

edit..oh and hurling is evry like Scottish shinty
Oh, I wasn't that big back when I played it. And my jersey fit me.

I once took a sliothar (the ball - about the size of a tennis ball and with the consistency of a rock) at speed in the solar plexus from a guy who was then on the county youth team. It was some time before I could stand. I've never been shot, but I expect it feels similar.

Shinty is supposed to be related. Hurling is a much bigger sport though.

Here's a clip from a game.

Interesting, does everybody speak it in Ireland as a first language? Is it somewhat releated to english language, some different dialect maybe?
Gaelic is from my understand barely spoken, same as welsh is barely spoken in wales. But bilingual policies ensure that dead languages are kept going. the way welsh is forced on children imo is children abuse (the bit about dead languages is directed at wales, i dont know if gaelic is dead)

Welsh is just crazy, I'd like to take some lessons though.
its not a nice language, i have to recieve every communication whilst im at uni in both welsh and english, and they always put welsh first even though there are about 300 welsh speakers out of 12000 students here. And every sign every receipt, every product etc. have to have a welsh translation. It would be like reading everything in english and next to it having it written in spanish for a tiny minority, fucking stupid. I hate nationalism.
