The torch is coming through Holland again. Personally, I think that's just tempting the North Sea to barge in here and put it out too much but hey, who am I.

I mean, carrying 'the flame that should never be extuingished' through a country beneath sea-level? I can only assume it was again the Greek who thought of this :D;)

    and you do... :LOL::LOL:
No, but the journalists might just have talked to someone who does have a clue, eh?

don't you think you are acting like myster i know it all about athen's olympic games??
Myster? When did I say I was an authority? I said I was going on what I've read, and you've responded with moronic peronal attacks.

greeks are working on that 4 years now and things are going well.
maybe not THAT well, but well enough.
What's well enough mean? Either they'll be finished or they won't, and being behind schedule is not much of an indicator that they'll be finished.

Freeze. It may not even have been that link, though the timing was mroe than a bit suspicious. If it's harmless, it's harmless. I blame Microsoft.

Good question, but I really doubt the Blaster worm was written by a jock or a petrol-head anyway. :)

    Saviola may get Olympics call
Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa has not ruled out calling up Javier Saviola for the Olympic Games in August.

The Barcelona forward would miss some domestic football if the South Americans decide to name 'The Little Rabbit' in their squad.

Speaking before the friendly with Morocco, Bielsa told skysports.com that it is an option to rely on the Barca striker.

"He is one of the options that I will study in the coming weeks," Bielsa revealed.

"He could be in the Olympics but we will negotiate with everybody. He is a player who should have continuity and we need his quality.

"I have not received pressure from Barcelona nor am I going to admit to them who I will call for my squad.

"I will always look at what is best for Argentina."

Bielsa has been impressed with Saviola's impact in La Liga this term.

"His presence and change of rhythm, that can be explosive in the Spanish League in the penalty area," he added.

"He is scoring goals and has been key in the recovery of his team."

The Athens tournament takes place between August 11 and August 28.

Argentina will field a team of Under-23 internationals plus three over-aged players.

IOC to allow transsexual athletes in Olympics

LONDON (AP) -- Athletes who have undergone sex change operations will be eligible to compete in the Olympics for the first time under new rules being finalized by the IOC.

The International Olympic Committee convened a meeting in Sweden last month of medical experts in the field and will announce its policy in the next few weeks.

"We will have no discrimination," IOC medical director Patrick Schamasch told The Associated Press on Thursday. "The IOC will respect human rights."

Details are still being worked out, but Schamasch said transsexual athletes will be eligible for the Olympics once they have passed a certain amount of time after sex-change surgery.

"The trend is to have an ineligibility period," he said. "Then after certain conditions have been fulfilled, the athlete will be able to compete in his or her new sex."

The exact length of the waiting period hasn't been determined. Schamasch said officials want to make sure that any side effects of hormone therapy have worn off.

Schamasch said he didn't know whether there were any potential transsexual athletes in line to compete in next summer's Athens Olympics, but noted that several international sports federations have asked the IOC for guidance.

"We need to be proactive," he said.

The rule covers both male-to-female and female-to-male cases.

Some contend transsexual athletes have a physical advantage against other women. Men have higher levels of testosterone and greater muscle-to-fat ratio and heart and lung capacity. However, doctors say, testosterone levels and muscle mass drop after hormone therapy and sex-change surgery.

Until 1999, the IOC conducted gender verification tests at the Olympics but the controversial screenings were dropped before the 2000 Sydney Games.

One reason for the change was that not all women have standard female chromosomes. In addition, there are cases of people who have ambiguous genitalia or other congenital conditions.

Over the decades, there have been various accusations of men impersonating women and competing in the Olympics.

"The eligibility of transsexuals to participate needs to be clarified and dealt with," Arne Ljungqvist, the IOC medical commission chairman who organized the meeting of experts in Stockholm.

One of the best-known cases of transsexuals in sports involves Renee Richards, formerly Richard Raskin, who played on the women's tennis tour in the 1970s.

Recently, Canada's Michelle Dumaresq made news competing as a mountain bike racer. Formerly Michael, Dumaresq had sex reassignment surgery in 1996 and competed for Canada at last year's World Championships in Austria. She finished 24th in the downhill discipline.

"I'm in contact with several other athletes with a trans history and some could qualify for the next Olympics," she said in an e-mail message. Dumaresq still has a license to race. While mountain biking is an Olympic event, her discipline is not.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

This issue isn't even about what I think of transexuals etc, it's about the fairness and credibility of the Olympics. I think it's silly that they say "We will have no discrimination", because IMVHO, this isn't about discrimination, it's simply about the rules! Just like women footballers shouldn't play in a men's league, people should stick to their own gender when it comes to sports, surgery or not.

Heaven help the credibility of the Olympic Games.

What the hell? Where did my Olympics thread go? I didn't even realise it was gone. I thought I'd started a potentially decent discussion in that thread about transexuals being allowed to compete in the Olympics. Hmmm :lazy:
