Alex demands winning start Saturday 10 June, 2006

Alessandro Del Piero insists Italy need to win rather than impress in their opening World Cup tie against Ghana.

The Azzurri kick off their campaign on Monday evening in a game which the Juventus icon has labelled as vital.

“We are not going out there to entertain or leave a good impression, but to win the match,” he said on Saturday.

“We are two days away from our first encounter and we need to focus on the Africans because that is our most difficult game.”

The Azzurri will start the tie as favourites against the World Cup debutants, but Del Piero is showing them great respect.

“We’ve studied them and we will continue to study them. I know Appiah well, but they also have Essien, Muntari and Kuffour,” he noted.

“They are an expert side with international experience.

“We hope to be more German like rather than Costa Rican like, but it isn’t important to score loads of goals. We just need to get more than our opponents.”

Whispers around the Italy camp insist that Del Piero is likely to start on the bench at the expense of Francesco Totti who is making his comeback after injury.

“Totti is at 70 per cent? I’m at 100 per cent, but there is no duel,” underlined the Bianconeri captain.

“There is no dispute with Francesco, we are both at the disposal of Lippi and the Coach will do what he feels is right for the team.”

Del Piero was also inevitably asked to comment on the Calciopoli scandal which has hit his club after his month of silence.

“I haven’t spoken because I like to go into the hills in order to evaluate the situation and to find some focus,” he explained.

“A bit like what Achilles used to do when he isolated himself to study his strategies.

“From the mountains my evaluations were different, but my idea of attack can’t be revealed.

“A lot of things have happened since then and I await news. Everyone at Juventus is patiently waiting with hope. However, there is still need for clarity as the situation is complex.

“Luciano Moggi? There is no need to be surprised if myself and my teammates have offered support and affection to Moggi.

“However, this is separated from the facts. We want to know how things are going to turn out.”

Juventus, due to a number of intercepted phone calls made by their former director Moggi, are facing the threat of relegation for sporting fraud.

It should be silly to play with classic 4 man midfield while we don't have a proper left winger.

Perrotta---Barone/De Rossi--Pirlo---Camoranesi

Perrotta is not a winger so I think that solution is out of question.

----------------------------

It should be:

1) 4-3-2-1,whit either Toni or Gila up front and 2 striker supporters

or

2) 4-3-1-2,with one striker supporter.

i would rather choose perrotta for this game, pirlo aint gona fight for the balls, and essien would win every ball then in the midfield. derossi and perrota both can fight with him, camo can go more forward from right, dp will play more on the left side, gila, toni through the middle. oddo and grosso dont need to go forward then, and can defend more.

totti would most probably subs dp so then we could change to

-camo---perrotta--derossi--
--------------totti------------
---------toni---gila/iaquinta----------

sadly i think iaquinta will have a part in the game as well, if we dont have rino. and i am not very confident in iaquinta.

well he has to make a name for himself if he wants to go out of udine, so i think he wont do bad. i dont think lippi thinks "ghana deserves totti", he will save him for the other 2 matches. The big problem i see with italy is if zamb doesnt get better for the 2nd match

most likely he will go to roma, there where news somewhere in the spring when iaquinta looked forward to be reunited with spalletti. roma do need a extra striker, spalletti knows iaquinta well, so no need for iaquinta to prove something, in fact he might feel as, it doesnt matter how i do, i have a safe place in roma.

btw whats the actual lippis? eleven: gigi-zamb-canna-nesta-grosso-camo-pirlo-totti-gila-toni and rino or derossi? or which one is it? lippis and his rotation drive me nuts :p
well, you should understand there has been reasons why lippi hasnt had a chanse to actually play the first eleven.

1. first games to test, give every player chanse, so to decide which ones to choose, also get qualification for world cup

2. players started to get injured, with buffon first, totti in the start of the year, so he couldnt actually play the first XI anyway.

3. even now when players are fit again, questions over totti, how fit he is. also we have injurys with defenders now.

anyway, yeah i have to agree it is very hard to make a starting XI, but i think its not maybe that bad, that we actually dont have certain starting lineup. why? players are used to rotation, in every match a player could get injured. imo its good lippi does so. look what happened in euro, totti was out and then italy suffered. now we wont face a problem like that imo. the team and the gameplan is not on one man shoulders.
