is it only me or does everyone think italys preformance against ukraine was'nt convincing. i think italy has a good chance to do superbly this world cup for a couple of reasons. in my personal opinion the italian squad has a new edge and has adequate advantages to make them competitors.
to start out, i'll start out with italy's disadvantages:
* the players have a very short temper specially when they r behind by a goal or two, in specific i fear players like gattuso being sent off in any game it might cost the team alot specially at the latter stages.
* italys defences and in specidic cannavaro, and nesta. i agree they r superb defenders, they have great vision on the pitch, superb interferes to protect the team but aging is showing and its very clear when it comes to there speed. it might be a problem, this makes buffon a very important key in italys ability to prevent goals from being conceded.
* the current scandals have an effect on the teams morale there is no doubt and the media is'nt making it any easier for the team. i mean the media should keep the scandals aside for a while or at least till this world cup is over and some motivation should be shown to this team cos they really need that. i really cant understand how the media expects the team to do anything in this world cup when all they do is butcher the players in personal basis.
* i wish italy can end all there games with out the need for penalty shoot outs cos history has proved several times that italy have the worest record when it comes to penalty shoot outs!!!!!
as for italy's advantages:
* for the first time italy has good attacking options i,e its not just good at defending (italys best known characteristic) but has 5 different options up front. with del piero, toti, gilardino, inzaghi, and luca toni. ( although i think inazghi is'nt back to his known form)
* italys midfield, is clearly the strongest part of the team with cammorensi, gattuso, and pirlo.
* there are adequate substitiues to nearly every position making the team stable and higher chances for rotation.
i hope this world cup will be fair for italy a team that has been punished severly in the 2002 version of the world cup by poor refreeing!!!!
italy has no choice but playing for the first position in the group stage falling second will mean italy gets to the second stage to meet brazil, the strongest team in this tournement and i am afraid italy may lose out to brazil and therefore an early exist for the team. i strongly belive that in the group stage italy has an upperhand in being first in the group as the czech rep is not the same any more, ghana is not a team that can stun italy i agree they have five good players like eissien, and appiah. i fear the usa as they have a great squad that might upset the czech ghana and even italy.
i think after getting past that second stage every thing is possible and the race to the final is open for the auzzuri and they have the qualities to go further this time. i personally think the teams that are threats for the italians are argentina, holland and brazil. i belive italy can take on brazil but i prefer seeing that in the latter stages not the second stage.
i hope italy gets further and i honestly hope they win this one its about time and lets not forget this is the last world cup for most of the team. i have complete faith that lippi knows how to manage this team he has made superb changes that changed how italy plays specially upfront. compared to trapatonni, lippi is way calmer and knows when to make fine adjutments that pay off at the end of the day.
