He would have been a starter after some time if he's really got the quality he supposedly has. He would have been a good long-term investment.
Our problems aren't the Knezevic's, Molinaro's and Salihamidzic's, players of such calibre were always present in our team and are in every other big club. They are called back-up players and are here to patch things up when necessary. Putting all the blame on them is idiotic.
Our problem is the lack of Cannavaro's, Thuram's and Zambrotta's. So I really don't get all the constant bashing of these average players. What it all comes down to is the incomptence of the board and manager who chose to ignore our biggest problems.

It's both. But lack of quality is evident more than ever, especially in the defense department. Legrotaglie improved from his horenduos self but is still far from a quality CB, Chiellini is pretty good but he needs to learn a lot still, Molinaro is poor man's De Ceglie and De Ceglie is a poor man's Zambrotta, Grygera is again average and Zebina is a class above him. Having any of Knezevic, Mellberg, Molinaro, Salihamidzic or Grygera, wouldn't be half as bad if we had quality guys in the first place. Our whole back-line is average.
Coupled with the obvious lack of a creative spark in the midfield and some of our underachieving stars, we simply suck.

Yes it is very sad, as a fan i was always proud to have great names in defense but now we have this. The problem is that we didn't a lot of changes over the past two years but we didn't see anything.
I agree with you on, but CR gets credit for a couple of wins and positive results. I distinctly remember the first Inter game where we actually outplayed them tactically.

The fierce/extra determination of our old champions, who have been in hell came back from the dead/fallen, can easily change the odds and overwhelm our opponents, making it look like a tactical ownage.
Combine that with some injury problems had, some internal heavy crisis Milan faced and the lack of a proper coach for Inter and you can easily do the maths.
Against much more inferior teams, with lesser material and coaches,
without this extra determination, our team struggled, esp at the last part of the season, after x-mas,
when our position was somewhat consolidated and our champions proved their point!
Neddy and probably DP, roared for the last time,
respectively defensively and offensively,
their individual brilliance made the difference many times over.
This year they are both one year older and less determined, they proved that even without Moggi, they can make the difference.
This year they are a part of a supposedly more complete/competent team.
They are not unique components who cant be replaced, Amauri and Giovinco can help them curry the weight and they only act as tactical pieces and not as saviors.

1. he was not for sale (the reason milan did not want him)
2. he was not available for a loan with buy-out clause
3. he is unexperienced and the fact he did not make 2 games for chelsea got to mean something
if we took him on loan the only ones that would benefit from that were chelsea.
ivanovic would make his first team experiences with us (including making n00b mistakes that have to happen, when you are new in a league) and after gaining experience they would take him back and we would have paid for a defender that is immature and did do his mistakes with us just to become a better player for chelsea.
