There was no need whatsoever to put his arm up like that on the check.

No need whatsoever.

It would have been a much different story if he body checked him, but he didn't.

I don't understand why people are trying to defend Chara. They were going through random Twitter shit on TSN and I heard this one: "The real culprit here is the end of the glass..." Yeah, really? Go fuck yourself.

To me, the Chara hit is worse than the Betuzzi sucker punch considering he threw his head right into a blunt object. This is much worse than just a punch. At those sort of speeds they're playing at Patch could have lost his life over there this, unlike the horrendous action on Moore. In the case of Big Bert, he was suspended from international hockey for the rest of the 2004 season, including the playoffs and into the following season which was the lockout year. He didn't return to hockey until the following season and had to deal with assault charges against Moore.

I don't think Chara deserves assault charges, but definitely deserves a similar lengthy ban. But he probably won't get it. A play like this will always be shrouded in the notion that, "it's a typical hockey hit," which it isn't, but that's what is always said in cases like these.

Hopefully the guy can at least get on skates again.

National Hockey League Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy today issued the following statement on Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara's hit in NHL game #996 last night against the Montreal Canadiens:

"I conducted a hearing with Boston Bruins' defenseman Zdeno Chara with respect to the major penalty for interference and game misconduct that he was assessed at 19:44 of the second period for a hit on Max Pacioretty of the Montreal Canadiens.

"After a thorough review of the video I can find no basis to impose supplemental discipline. This hit resulted from a play that evolved and then happened very quickly -- with both players skating in the same direction and with Chara attempting to angle his opponent into the boards. I could not find any evidence to suggest that, beyond this being a correct call for interference, that Chara targeted the head of his opponent, left his feet or delivered the check in any other manner that could be deemed to be dangerous.

"This was a hockey play that resulted in an injury because of the player colliding with the stanchion and then the ice surface. In reviewing this play, I also took into consideration that Chara has not been involved in a supplemental discipline incident during his 13-year NHL career."

It's impossible for us to determine whether or not Chara really intended to do this, but I do believe that Chara should be held responsible for his actions. First, it was an act of interference as Pacioretty already dumped the puck and was out of the play, and second, Chara has severely injured a player due to this infraction.

It could have been a matter of timing, where Chara wanted to shove him into that section between the benches. However, there should still be further punishment since Chara is 100% ACCOUNTABLE for how he conducts himself on the ice. By giving Chara zilch in terms of punishment, the NHL is saying (to me, at least) that you aren't responsible for the well-being of your opponents and this is more an issue dealing with the environment (the "turnbuckle" and the hard ice). This was Chara's mistake and he really got off easy.

P.S. I love how he just passively skates away. Even I, a lifelong hater of the Habs, am left with a bitter taste in my mouth.
