so Habs have Markov, Gorges, Wisniewski, Spacek and Gill out injured. 1st 2 season over, Gill day to day, Spacek :boh: and Wis 1 month if he's got some fracture. I think he'll miss a couple of games.

I would have asked to talk to his agent before the trade was done and make a deal with the player. Maybe they did that, or not.
Then they would have had to agree to an extension at the time of the trade and signed immediately upon completion of the trade. You can't make a trade with a pending UFA with the "understanding" that a new contract will be done after the season. That is an attempt to circumvent all types of collective bargaining rules

Not official yet, but BOS trading Wheeler and Stuart to ATL for Peverley and Valabik. Pending trade call.
What?

That HAS to be a salary cap move. Boston is getting raped on that deal. Valabik is not good at all, and Peverley is smaller, older than wheeler, and only marginally better, and that is debateable.

Gotta be a salary dump. There is no other way that trade makes sense

This is a very weird feeling. I remember watching Kaberle from when he was first called up from St. John's and nobody expected anything from him and now he's gone. I love this player to death and the Bruins are lucky to have him now.

Juve fan too. :'(

Whooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Damn, that is a lot, then. Holy shit. Boston must be going for boke. I heard they are sending Mark Stuart to Chicago
They definitely paid a lot for Kabs. I figured it was going to be Wheels and a 2nd.

I would have asked to talk to his agent before the trade was done and make a deal with the player. Maybe they did that, or not.
There are a lot of rumors floating around, but this is how myself, and several of my buddies in TO figured the deal before it became official:

We're resigning Tomas Kaberle. It's just about the only explanation. ;)

There were quite a few rumors floating around that he was only really open to going to Boston (maybe a couple other teams). Staying in the east allows him a shorter flight home, and he could be playing for a contender in a quality hockey market for the rest of his career. He's even got his buddy David Krejci to hang out with. HA!

Considering that Boston almost traded for Kaberle before they sent Kessel packing (a deal that died on the floor of the '09 draft), I think there's been some level of communication between parties that suggests he'll resign. I would say communication approaching borderline illegal conversation, but obviously I'm wildly speculating.

That conditional 2nd is not so conditional, IMO. If we don't sign Kabs, this is a terrible deal for Boston.

As it stands, we have 7 centers on the team (well, Savvy is LTIR and may never play again, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it, so 6), Krejci, Bergy and Seguin are all 25 or younger (Campbell, Kelly and Peverley are the others) and it was always going to be difficult to fit Colborne in.

Our farm system is stocked with quality forward prospects (Beyond our rooks Marchand and Seguin, we've got Caron, Sauve, Knight, Spooner... even guys like Hamill and Arniel, although we'll see how they all turn out) we still have Toronto's 1st and Minny's 2nd this year (although not our own picks anymore), and while we paid a premium, we can certainly afford it.

This trade would also seem to make our TML 1st rnd pick more valuable, and their Bruins pick less valuable, hence the price raises a little more.

What?

That HAS to be a salary cap move. Boston is getting raped on that deal. Valabik is not good at all, and Peverley is smaller, older than wheeler, and only marginally better, and that is debateable.

Salary considerations were in play - this move needed to be made to make room for Kaberle (this trade was completed first) - but I completely disagree that we're getting raped. Peverley is 28, and I guess I rate him higher than you do. Our PP just got much better with Kabs and Pevs, and we certainly have as much quality depth at center as any team in the league IMO (pens have more skill at the position, but they're not as deep). Rich Peverley is a fairly versatile player, and from an offensive standpoint, right now I think he's a significant upgrade from Blake Wheeler.

Stuart is UFA and had been a healthy scratch of late; he was very solid, and a pick of ours... I really like the guy... but he's not factoring into our lineup in the short term, we weren't going to resign him, and we have solid alternatives for the long term.

I'm very fond of Wheeler - he's a well spoken guy, who always says the 'right things'. He hasn't really hit his stride the past two seasons though, and he can be infuriating to watch at times - really plays much smaller than his frame, frequently guilty of floating a little too much, not a great shot, seems to panic at times with the puck in scoring position. Pretty good penalty killer, still young and has room for (considerable) improvement. Also should be noted that he's a natural Center, so maybe the Thrashers will shift him back.

He's RFA at the end of the season, and would likely be making almost double what Peverley makes (1.3M-ish for RP through next season).

This is a win now move that gives us cap flexibility moving forward. Like I said, I really like both of these guys and I think it's quite a good trade for Atlanta as well.

This is a very weird feeling. I remember watching Kaberle from when he was first called up from St. John's and nobody expected anything from him and now he's gone. I love this player to death and the Bruins are lucky to have him now.

Juve fan too. :'(
Aww, buddy, you can still cheer him on this year - at least he's found a good home.

This was a really good deal for Toronto, Max. I know it stings, but it had to happen, and the return is very significant. Slowly but surely, Toronto is on their way back up (although hopefully, at least for this year, they're headed back down).

Truth be told, I'm really excited to see Kaberle in a Bruins uniform. He's a quality pro, and our transition game just got a huge boost.

Rollie, EVERYONE in Boston is saying that the trade with Wheeler and Stuart was a pure salary dump. As far as talent goes, they did not get close to equal value in that deal.

I know that you are an eternal optimist, but come on. That was not a good move when you consider player for player here.
