So, Mark.

What's the latest with the Habs?

I'm afraid to ask
Same old. Talks with OTT, EDM, NAS, NYI, L.A, STL... Gomez trade rumours(who would be dumb enough to take that contract? Gainey ain't around), Kostitsyn trade rumours...Gorges contracts talks only in July...

You're trading Gionta for a 12 pack of Molson Canadian.:D
We own the league now. Molson Canadian is the official NHL beer. :p

I'm not sure how that works, so you probably know more than me.

Does a waiver acquisition work differently than a trade?

Just read that Shero says he's looking for another forward whether Sid comes back or not.

It should work differently for a waiver claim, as you are only responsible for the unpaid portion of the player's contract

Its along the lines of what happened to Randy Moss. When he was traded to Minnesota, they got hit with his entire salary at the entire cap figure (so to speak, since there was no cap), but once he got waived, and claimed by Tennessee, then the Titans were only responsible for what was remaining on the contract for this year. They would have been hit with his cap figure for next year if he were in the middle of a multi year contract, but since he, like Zherdev, is a free agent after this year, then the prorated salary for the remainder of the year should be the only cap figure

I get it now. Thanks mucho Sergio.:D

Could be a better option than trading for someone and having to give up some second or third round picks plus prospects.

trade or waiver, the team pays what's left for this year. If a guy is traded or picked up by waivers at half season then his new club pays half of the contract(next year=full) and the cap number for this season is at half of what he's making.

some players(depends of age), if waived and called back then can be signed for half of his salary if another club picks him up. ex: Souray.

OTT receives conditional 7th round pick for Kovalev. If PIT wins 1st round of playoffs and Kovalev plays 50 per cent of games, it's a 6th.
