Sony Computer Entertainment revealed its next generation console PlayStation 3. The console is set to launch in spring 2006. Ken Kutaragi refers the PS3 as a supercomputer for computer entertainment.
PlayStation 3 will be powered by the Cell Processor at 3.2GHz, with 512KB L2 Cache; the graphic processor is Nvidia RSX "Reality Synthesizer" at 550MHz, which is capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution; it has 512MB of graphics render memory which can perform 100 billion shader operations and 51 billion dot products per second. Nvidia RSX is said to be more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards at $1000.
The PlayStation 3 will use Blu-ray discs as the media format, which can hold 6 times as much data as DVDs. PS3 will be backward compatible with all existing PS2 and PSone software. The machine also includes Memory Stick DUO, SD, Compact Flash slots, as well as a slot for detactable 2.5" HDD.
