It was only last week when Delneri was openly defending Cassano...

“As a player, Antonio isn't up for debate. I left him when I left Genova and I don't understand what has happened now.

“He has this sword upon which he falls every now and again, and that can be damaging. But the task of protecting him is part of a Coach's job.

“He is a bizarre lad. But if I had misunderstandings with him in the first few months, there was then an intense relationship.

“Cassano is a natural talent for his physical and technical qualities.

“I think and I hope that the relationship with Samp can be repaired.

“Respect is fundamental. His insobriety is grave: if it's true that he went against the President, the relationship will become difficult.

“I think it's an obligation to be firm, but if there is the slightest chance of recovering the situation then it should be put into practice.”

Delneri gives me the impression he rates cassano very highly, and whilst acknowledging that he needs rather special care, that it is part of a manager's job to keep him in line, and to protect him from himself.

I hugely hope we sign him. he would bolster our attack immensely, and we have the only manager who has even partially tamed Cassano in the past, the recent past at that...talent wise, he could take over from DP. Yes, I know we have more urgent need for a prima punta, but...I would hate for Cassano to head to Inter.

I can understand people suggesting that a piece of human dynamite is the last thing we need when we have just retrieved our grint, and as a team we look kinda familial, which is surely the perfect environment to breed success, both on and off the field...

Ideally, we could have him on loan, with a price agreed and option to buy. However, if his contract is rescinded, could he not then sign for another club straight away????

The way Marotta seems to do business, I doubt we will hear anything from him regarding Cassano, until either he signs for another club, or signs for us. I like his style so far...confident and calm and concealed.

Please. This is all bullshit so he has an excuse to sell Cassano.
Like that's some sort of shocking revelation. Plus, maybe he's already sold him (to us!).

But just read his quotes. "Last night I walked the streets of Genoa and not a single Sampdoria fan asked me to make peace with Cassano."

LOL. He's trying to make it seem like he's completely justified in not forgiving Cassano (maybe he is anyway, maybe he isn't) but when you come out into the media like this and start saying how you can't forgive him and the fans don't want you to, blah blah blah.

He's definitely trying to make it sound like the relationship is irreconcilable and the only alternative is to... fill in the blank.
Yeah, that would make sense if they were actually talking about selling him. But they're not, they're looking to have his contract cancelled. Which is only going to lose Samp a bundle of cash.

No matter how I look at this situation, it makes very little sense. Samp really has nothing to gain by doing this, so I'm certain that something serious happened.

So when will the Germans get their four spots? In two years?
It's still not 100% sure, but unless a miracle happens this year and all the German teams are eliminated soon while the Italians end up winning everything+having at least 2 teams in the CL and EL semis, then yes, in 2012/2013 (and in the following seasons most probably) Germany will have 4 in CL while Italy will have 3.

I am sure.
Next season (2011/12) serie A will have 4 teams in CL. Three go directly and one plays the qualifiers.
I thought you're wrong, but read some cites and can proove - it's it.
But just can't understand why???

The UEFA ranking determines the number of teams competing in the season after the next, not in the first season after the publication of the ranking. Thus, the 2011 ranking determines the allocation in 2012–13, not 2011–12.

Okay. Let's say next year there are 4 Italian teams in the CL semifinal and 4 Italian teams in the Europa league semi final. Will Germany get 4 spots the following year and the year after that? Meaning in 2012-13 and 2013-14?

Semifinals and other stages doesn't count, it's all about points.
If all German teams will go up to the quarters then (I think) even this scenario can't help us in the war with Germans, because they'll get a lot of points on preliminary stages.

And btw, we have to fight not only Germany, but also Spain!
Look at this.
Before next season the situation will be:
2 Spain 13.875 13.312 17.928 45.115
3 Germany 13.500 12.687 18.083 44.27
4 Italy 10.250 11.375 15.428 37.053
+this season for everyone.
Now it doesn't matter for as - Spain or Germany.

ps. Also we can't have 8 teams in all semis because we (and every country) have only max 7 teams in Europe. And We'll have 6.

Before the start of the season the teams should know the objectives. It will be unfair a team like Sampdoria to fight all season for the 4th place in serie A, get it and then in the CL final (assuming, lets say, that the CL final is Bayern-Inter), Inter to lose and Germany to overtake Italy in the coefficient list. In that case Sampdoria will miss out on CL, even if they played all season to reach the objective, which is the 4th place.

UEFA and the teams need to know at least 1 year earlier what are they playing for in the season. That way they can react accordingly in the market and throughout the season.

This year determines what will happen in Europe in season 2012/13. The results in Europe in 2010/2011 reflect in season 2012/13 (two seasons from now). That's why I can't make long term predictions and be sure in what I predict.
From how it looks right now, for many years to come, Germany will have 4 teams and Italy 3 in CL. But all that will start from 2012/13, not from next year. This is a subject of change, of course. If in the next 2-3 seasons the Germans do bad and the Italians great, then the Germans won't keep their 4 places for more than 1-2 seasons.

Btw, many of you know this already, but for those who don't.... Inter-Bayern CL final directly decided how many teams will Italy and Germany have in season 2011/2012.
If Inter didn't win the CL final then the Germans were going to have 4 CL places next year and Juve's objective this year was gonna be top 3, not top 4, because the 4th place wasn't gonna take us to CL.

If we end up 4th this year, then we're gonna owe Inter for us playing CL next year :D
But that won't happen, hopefully, and we'll easily reach top 3.
