My first choice would honestly be Mark Jackson. He would have respect of the players (17 years in the game), he's a known entity in NBA circles, and although a short career as a coach, he was successful with Golden State, considering that he was still at the helm of a young squad at the time.

Numbers aren't everything. He is an all time great, no question. But he is not the GOAT. That belongs to one Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Sometimes it just isn't about the numbers. Just watch the game films of Jordan. He was ruthless, fearless, not afraid to take, and more often times than not, miss that game winning shot.

Here is one of the most amazing things about MJ. Teams set up defensive schemes specifically to stop him at all costs. During a time where hand checking was allowed, and the league was much more physical. Aside from his 2nd year when he had a broken foot, take a look at the amount of games that guy missed during his career.

How exactly is he a walking disaster? He led Golden State to 2 playoff runs in his 3 years as coach.

Not only did those teams rank in the top 10 in defense, but their pace was also top 5. He let Curry and Klay play through the inconsistencies that young players have. He also had a 21 year old Harrison Barnes and 23 year old Draymond Green.
Yes, Kerr took over the next season and they won the title, but Jackson helped to lay that foundation down for this dynasty.

Read what he did to Festus Ezeli, lies for team manipulation and power tripping. The last thing a toxic circus show like current Lakers need is a super popularizing, egocentric crazy man for coach (he used to take Curry to church ,they would bless his injured ankles, he had to dance and pretend it was healed). Created super hostile working conditions, became unhireable afterwards. Despite respectable playoff team with that super talented team (he was defensive coach only, their offense shot up after he left).
If you read up on him you will be frighten of the mere idea of him becoming your next coach.

Festus Ezeli was injured, he told the team without Festus there, that he is injured and wants you guys to lose, to prove that they need him and cant do anything without him. The players believe him and get angry, they confront their teammate, he says ofcourse it's a lie and burst into tears.
This just a handful of wtf toxic team chemistry behaviours he routinely did, this mad man thought this is a proper way to motivate and encourage players .
Not to mention on the pitch, the GSW we now know as off the ball most team friendly passing heavy historic ball they play, under him they were last in passes per game and touches per game, his offensive game was almost all iso heavy except for some set passing plays. He used to have Klay play iso ball...
It wasnt all negative since Klay and Curry flourished as youngsters under him in terms of finding out their true calling as bonafide splash brothers duo, encouraged them, and he was immense for their defensive identity, Klay had no defensive game when he was drafted, Jackson encouraged him to do it. But in pretty much everything else he was a walking disaster.
