The Hangover

Director: Todd Phillips

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Heather Graham

Plot: Two days before his wedding, Doug and his three friends drive to Las Vegas for a blow-out bachelor party they'll never forget. But, in fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can't remember a thing. For some reason, they find a tiger in the bathroom and a six-month-old baby in the closet of their suite at Caesars Palace. The one thing they can't find is Doug. With no clue as to what transpired and little time to spare, the trio must retrace their hazy steps and all their bad decisions in order to figure out where things went wrong and hopefully get Doug back to L.A. in time to walk down the aisle.

The Informers

Director: Gregor Jordan

Writers: Brett Easten Ellis, Nicholas Jarecki

Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Mickey Rourke, Brad Renfro, Rhys Ifans, Wynona Ryder, Amber Heard, Jon Foster

Plot: In such works as "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho," Brett Easton Ellis brilliantly dissects contemporary American society, a culture in which too much is never enough. Now, adapting his own acclaimed novel for the screen, he returns to the Los Angeles of the early 1980's with a multi-strand narrative that deftly balances a vast array of characters who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman, an amoral ex-con).

Release Date: April 24 (NY)

Hunger

Director: Steve McQueen

Writer: Steve McQueen, Enda Walsh

Cast: Michael Fassbender, Liam Cunningham, Stuart Graham

Plot: In 1981, a deadly serious battle takes place in the infamous H-block of Belfast’s Maze Prison. Republican inmates, led by Bobby Sands (Fassbender), refuse to eat until the British government acknowledges the IRA as a legitimate political organization. Steve McQueen’s commanding direction captures the phsyical details of their struggle. Is it suicide or martyrdom?

Release: December 5, 2008 (Limited), March 20, 2009 (Expanded)(Maybe)

Trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/hunger/

Notes: Looks like a "must see" that may not get seen by anyone. Completely destroyed the award circuit this season as a foreign film. Though it's indie status has kept it from gaining proper and deserved note. Keep a look out.

The Hurt Locker

Director: Kathryn Bigelow

Cast: Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Evangeline Lilly, David Morse, Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce, Brian Geraghty.

Plot: The Hurt Locker is a riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s unrecognized heroes: the technicians of a bomb squad who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives in one of the world’s most dangerous places.

This film has been tearing it up on the festival circuit and had to earn a wide release. In addition, Jeremy Renner (Dahmer, The Unusuals) has already earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actor in a leading role. I honestly have not seen a bad review for this film. I highly recommend checking this out instead of Transformers.
