Maybe not. The problem is that everybody would still be hitting the same part of the database with updates whether it's in a single thread or multiple. Because the other matchday threads wouldn't be affected during the match in question.

100 guests can't post. Most databases are happy to churn away simultaneous reads. That scales easily. It's all the writes that cause congestion.

Of course locking the match thread during play would be nice, but then we'd miss the insanity.
