I think we are in a difficult position. With our current squad I think we need at least a player with some offensive skills in central midfield and a defender who can play as a central defender and on one defensive flank. In a worst case scenario Nedved, Del Piero, Camo, Buffon and Trez all won't be available anymore in 2007 or at least 2008. And I think this scenario is quite probable. Del Piero and Nedved will retire and the others have already stated interest in new adventures. Plus, in two years Kovac will be 34, Birindelli 33 and Giannichedda 34. That's a lot to cover and with the scandal we lost a lot of money which doesn't make things easier.
Fortunately we have some promosing youngsters. But I've seen many promising youngsters fail. There is a big step from promising youngster to domestic top level or even international class. That means until 2008/2009 maybe 2 or 3 of those youngsters will be good enough in term of upper Serie A class (I prefer to make conservative assumptions). That still leaves many holes in our squad.
After all those players leaving this season our squad will continue to change a lot. That means it will need time for the players to adapt and for DD to make a team out of those players. And since we won't be able to buy many established stars the talents we buy will need some time to gain experience. There won't be no instant success. We will have to patient. But I see that our board has recognized this and did rightfully establish a 5 year frame.
