It is now more obvious than ever how important the first corner is in the match. Today Sampdoria got the first corner and it looked like that rule was to be broken when Juventus took the lead and got on Sampdoria player red carded. What happens afterwards? Juventus miss plenty of chances, Sampdoria fire on the counter twice, take the lead and bag the three points.

How important was that particular first corner? How important is the first corner in general? Tactically speaking, how can coaches work to getting that first corner if it has so much significance to the match result?

i never thought it was important. however i started paying attention after cronios mentioned it, and noticed the correlation.

i wish we could somehow have statistics about matches where juve lost the first corner and see how many we won vs draw and loss.

Although it is really nothing more than a silly superstition and an inside jock between some of the senior members.
There are some real motives behind this statistic that makes it tend to become relevant.
Juventus always was a strong team, stronger than most in the leagues, with high quality midfield and defense.
This midfield controls the possession and pace of the game. And also give us the upper hand in the attacking chances.

The opposition has little option than to desperately defend and only rely on counterattacks.
If our superior possession fails to tip the balance in our favor and land us the first attacking chances (goal or corner) then it means that this will be a tough day.
When their forwards force our defenders to concede a corner, before our efforts bring results, means that this might become one of those days that may trouble us.

With Capello, it feels that it was more accurate, as we really had an issue bouncing back, then
but with Conte, our fierce fighting spirit, helps us overcome every obstacle (well, most of the times) even Capello's records!

cronios do you think this 1st corner theory only applies to juventus matches? if you think it applies to other teams who do you think it does apply to?
