While that list is shocking, you can see the traces of old ways of thought and old management.
Top 50
1 Vlahovic : young striker of our future, an investment, worth the wages.
2 Szczesny : old management, expensive keeper who has not become what we anticipated. He will not be extended.
3 Bonucci : old management, bringing back a part of our successful times, He will not be extended unless a sweetheart deal like Chiellini (3m gross)
4 Sandro : old management extension, won't be extended.
7 Pogba : no transfer fee;
9 Cuadrado : already attempts to extend at a cheaper price, sweetheart deal probably more than Chiellini (4m I'd imagine)
10 Chiesa : our future, worth the wages.
13 Bremer : our future, worth the wages.
15 Rabiot : already trying to be sold, old management.
17 Di Maria : two year contract; talented and worth the short-term wages imo
21 Rugani : old management extension, won't be extended, active attempts to sell
25 Arthur : old management, won't be extended, active attempts to sell
36 Locatelli : young midfielder, controllable wages, worth the wages
39 Danilo : old management, getting older but possible to keep if wages kept under control. Might be extended;
If you look at that right there, in two seasons we will definitely eliminate Szczesny, Bonucci, Sandro, Cuadrado, Rabiot, Rugani, and MAYBE Arthur from that list. The goal will be to make smart decisions on wages and not continue down this path of unsustainable wages for most of the first squad. This is good and should've been the goal all along. We got too cocky in our financial position and too ambitious with wages. This should've NEVER been the case and I believe it is a classic tale of "its easy to spend somebody else's money." Paratici was very quick to throw out wages to keep the squad competitive but it hurt us in the long run. Ramsey should've never happened but there is an argument to be made that Rabiot was a risk worth taking. He didn't turn out good but he wasn't a complete disaster, just didn't fulfill the promise.
But I think there is cause for GREAT positivity in terms of the wage bill going forward especially after 2024. And the thing to keep in mind is the closer we get to 2024 the easier it will be to dump players like Arthur. We push hard on him now because his book value is high. Another year goes by, his book value total will decrease and we can afford to get back less to move him. Really wish he had gone to Valencia.
