Chhetri's English dream over, work permit denied

Indian striker Sunil Chhetri's dream of playing for English Championship side Queen's Park Rangers ended prematurely after the British government denied him work permit.

Chhetri had signed a three-year contract with QPR a few weeks back, although it was kept under wraps.

The club has been working to get Chhetri's work permit to play in England [ Images ] but on Saturday, the Delhi [ Images ] lad's agent informed him that it was rejected by the British government.

According to the newly launched website of Football Players Association of India, Chhetri was denied permit since India is not in the top 70 in the FIFA [ Images ] rankings and the British government does not grant permit to non European Union players whose country is ranked below 70.

Queen's Park Rangers, which is partly owned by steel magnate Laxmi Mittal, had been following Chhetri's career for over a year and were happy with his development as a player.

QPR CEO had also come down to see Chhetri in Barcelona where the Indian national team had a month-long training tour recently in preparation for the ongoing Nehru Cup.

Asked why he kept the contract with QPR under wraps, Chhetri said, "I had signed with QPR few weeks back and I knew I still would have had to wait for a work permit. So with lots of stories about me playing in Europe and with having a bad experience with the media in the Coventry case, I was sceptical."

"I am disappointed because the work permit is something that I can't do anything about, being so close and not getting it is indeed disappointing. But it's not the end of the world. I will still continue to work hard for my country and my club Dempo, who have been very supportive," he added.

Indian captain and his strike partner in the national team, Baichung Bhutia said, "Sunil (Chhetri) would surely have done well in Queen's Park. He has the ability to play even in the Premier League with one or two years of experience in the championship with QPR.

"It's sad that Indian team does not play enough international matches and that is a big set back for our ranking as well as our development. This is also a reason why today Sunil is not playing in England," added Bhutia, who was the first Indian to have played in English professional league for Bury FC from 1999-2002.

Since when? I know Zesh Rehman played for QPR and I hope he wasn't brought in by this guy just because he's Desi and happened to be decent.
Couldn't be. Mittal bought a stake in the club towards the end of 2007. I see that Zesh Rehman was at the club even before that...

I feel for Sunil Chettri though. He's got the talent to play in the Championships, he's miles ahead of any other striker we have in India. I think the work permit rules for footballers in UK are garbage. What does a national teams performance have to do with a footballers skills?

India beat Syria to lift Nehru Cup

New Delhi: Defending champions India defeated Syria on sudden death penalty to win the five nation Nehru Cup soccer tournament in New Delhi on Monday.

Both teams were locked goal-less after full time and tied 1-1 at the end of extra time forcing a penalty shootout which the home team won 5-4.

After the match was goalless in the regulation time, Renedy Singh scored through a free-kick in 24th minute of extra time. But Syria's Ali Dyab equalised in the last minute of the match to take the game to a tie-breaker.

Indian goalkeeper Subrata Paul's heroics lit up the dramatic summit clash as defending champions India tamed Syria via tie-breaker. Paul, the hero of the match made as many as three saves in the penalty shootout, including the last shot from Hamzeh Al Aitoni, triggering celebrations among the crowd.

Football fans in the stadium went into frenzy with joy as India registered a win over the Syrian team. The final match of the Nehru Cup International Football Tournament was held at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.

For India, Climax Lawrence, Sunil Chhetri, Steven Dias, Anwar Ali and Surkumar Singh scored in the shootout while Renedy Singh and Meharajuddin Wadoo missed the target.

For Syria, Raja Rafe, Mosab Balhous, Abdul Fatah Alaga and Abdul Razak Al Hussain found the target while the shots taken by Hamzeh Al Attouni, Wael Ayan and Ahmad Haj Muhammad were saved by Paul.

I had forgotten about this match :(. Great win for us btw, they are ranked 96th or something and we are somewhere after 160 I guess...
Btw, who wouldn't want Climax Lawrence in their squad? :D
