I think the way they work it is who has the most cpas at the moment. SO if del piero was being subbed and pessotto was in and so was thuram. Pessotto would still get the armband. Its like the italian national team. LEts say Canna gets injured"knock on wood" and needs to be taken off than dp if on would get the armband.
Sure you could give some crappy player the armband and perhaps nothing would change, however if you give that armband to someone special he could help elevate your team and spur them on to greater heights. When your team is seemingly down and out the captain's job is to motivate the team vocally and lead by example....if you just have some average player as captain he will not give your side encouragment and the match will be forever lost. The captain can become the heart and soul of the team if you are down and think the match is already over. Again, this something you would only understand having actually played the sport.

If the captain is so important why does he get subed in every game he plays? Not just juve, all over the world in every league.

Del Piero is one of the classiest players to ever wear our shirt, and even though he might not be one of the most inspirational players ever he still shows our club how to behave as professionals. However, he certainly is not the best leader the football world has ever seen.
As I have said before if you have a capable captain the role suddenly becomes incredibly important. If you do not have a capable captain, there is no hope for inspiration coming from any of the players on the team. The captaincy is only for show when you DONT have a capable player wearing the armband and just give to some world star. However, when an inspirational player is wearing the armband, anything could be possible. Just look at Gerrard in Istanbul, look at Keane's performances for Manure over the years, look at Scirea in our troubled times in the 80's. You can go on and on with examples of how a capable captain can make a HUGE difference in football. Just for show? That's something a tourist would think.

IMO Thuram showed how a Captain is supposed to play against Chievo. He played with great confidence and authority, imposing his presence both on his teammates and on the opposition. IMO Thuram should be captain.
BTW, and I've said this before, if you want to see an example of a REAL captain, watch Sergej Barbarez play for the Bosnian NT. Because of his attitude towards the NT jersey, his performances and commitment he's looked upon as a footballing God here, and he can truly do no wrong.

IMHO you don't need to be a natural born leader to be captain. A team certainly does need leaders, but they don't have to captain the team. Del Piero's the prime example of this. While he may not be a real leader, he represent Juventus on and off the pitch. Rather than being a leader, your captain should make clear what your team stands for.
This is exactly why Del Piero should leave. He isn't representative to this Juventus. This is about Ibrahimovic, Emerson and Mutu. Less class, more brutality. Give it to Ibra I say. That's by far more representative. And exactly how Capello wants Juve to be.
