Today sees the start of the much heralded Viareggio Cup, a youth tournament featuring some of the best teams from around the world. The Bianconeri will start their campaign by facing Danish side Nordsjaelland at 3pm.
And ahead of the showdown, Juventus.com presents a selection of statistics concerning the Primavera’s all-time performance in Viareggio.
Juventus will be playing in their 44th Viareggio competition. In the Tuscany, the Bianconeri have played a total of 193 games, winning 106, drawing 54 and losing 33. *
The trophy has returned to Turin on no less than seven occasions, with five of these triumphs coming between 2003 and 2010.
- 1961 Juventus 2-0 Vicenza (Cavallito (2))
- 1994 Juventus 3-2 Fiorentina (Cammarata, Manfredini, Del Piero)
- 2003 Juventus 1-0 Slavia Prague (Chiumiento)
- 2004 Juventus 3-0 Empoli (Chiumiento, Konko, Palladino)
- 2005 Juventus 2-0 Genoa (Bianco and Volpato)
- 2009 Juventus 4-1 Sampdoria (Perazzo o.g., Immobile (2), Daud)
- 2010 Juventus 4-2 Empoli (Immobile (3), Yago)
Juventus have ended the competition as runners-up on several occasions (1953, 1954, 1965, 1968 and 2006), finished in third place once (1971) and had three fourth-place finishes (1966, 1979 and 1981).
The Bianconeri’s biggest victory at the tournament came on 2 February 2008, courtesy of a 8-0 thumping of Massese in the group stages. The club’s biggest defeat, however, was on 4 February 1999 – a 5-0 reverse at the hands of Lazio.
The Juventus and Nordsjaelland youth sides will face each other for the first time in the tournament. However, the Bianconeri have already taken on Danish opposition in Viareggio. The group stage in 2000 saw Juventus run out 5-0 winners against AB Akademisk through goals from Guzman, Rigoni, Cingolani, Maresca and Gasbarroni.
Nordsjaelland will compete in Viareggio for the second time in their history. The Danes participated in last year’s tournament but failed to make it past the group stages after one draw and two defeats. They scored two goals and conceded six, with their heaviest defeat coming on 26 February 2011 against Genoa (3-0). *
Juventus have found the target in 19 consecutive games at Viareggio. The last time the Bianconeri failed to score was in a 2-0 defeat to Lazio in 2008.
Primavera coach Marco Baroni has enjoyed Viareggio trophy success as a Fiorentina player. In 1982, the Viola overcame English side Ipswich Town with a 1-0 win after extra-time. Cecconi scored the decisive goal and Baroni played the entire 120 minutes of the encounter.
