Nicole, I certainly understand you taking shots at Juventus FC, but with all seriousness Turin is a fantastic city. The only criticism of Turin seems to come from folks who have never been there. It is a beautiful place. It will not rank as high as the Italian capital, but I can assure you the people of Turin are miles better than the people of Rome - nicer, friendlier, more accomodating, less arogant - simply better.
Turin is one of the worst cities in Italy? Ever visited Napoli, Salerno, Bari, Palermo, Milan? Not that these are not great cities in their own right, but Turin beats them all.
I second Pado here. Torino may not be a tourist Mecca like Roma or Venezia, but - perhaps aside of the air pollution - it's one of my favorite cities in Italy. Partly for that reason.
Because it's not overloaded with tourist attractions, I never run into 300kg tourists who have no right wearing short pants yelling and pointing everywhere, complaining about how they can't find a McDonalds. And you don't have these hoardes of "Stevenik" travellers running into each other with their Rick Steves books open, because he never bothers to cover it. It's entirely under the radar from the hoardes. When I go to Torino, I do feel far more like I am living
la vita italiana (you only hear Italian and some French in the area) -- and not one co-opted by throngs of people dumped off a train on a daily basis.
Instead, Torino is an incredibly livable city, IMO. Complete with grand boulevards, many pedestrian-only areas, fantastic Baroque architecture, a rather distinguished set of residents, excellent cafes and food...
In some ways, I also don't like promoting it too much as I'm worried that my "find" will be spoiled when everyone else figures it out. I am a bit nervous about things after the Olympics, however, when people find out there's more than a shroud there.
