Totti keeps showing he is a disgrace to Italian football, and he trys to make up for it by giving a measly sum to a charity for his income.

Just read this:

After all the bad press Francesco Totti received for his spit at Euro 2004, he will be relieved by some good news. The Roma captain auctioned the shirt he wore when he scored his 100th Serie A goal Vs Inter on Ebay and earned a massive £2,400. Totti has donated all the proceeds to the PUPI foundation for underprivileged Argentine children.
Nicole, thank you, thank you, thank you, for making us laugh so much.

It makes me laugh that this could be a news offered by any respectable media. Do you know how much money POOPONE is making?

Hey -- Totti didn't have to donate anything to charity. So give credit where credit is due.

But then he never had to spit and stomp on players either. So the blame stays as well.

I think that Totti, like any other famous player is a construct. There is a business around him, involving, team, sponsors, and agents.

Now, a part of the business is making the player look more humane, because that soft spot may be used to soften consequences in case the player acts like a jerk.

Given evryone does this, it is acceptable, it is like part of the game.

However, isn't it ridiculous that somebody who earns some 6M stipend, + ?M sponsorships tried to pass as news a .0035M donation.

I'm sure he is being managed, and his "handlers" are deliberate in making sure this is part of his public image -- to help the marketability of himself, his jerseys, and Roma (not to mention possible tax breaks?). But then of course, you can be a jerk on the pitch and a decent guy off of it too. So you can't say that's probably the only motivation.

Actually, what's probably more ridiculous is that the media covered it like something that insignificant was newsworthy.

Wow, great of him to give 2k to charity, out of his modest 5000000 € salary.
so, how much is that??

I can't count the 0's!

anyway, thx Totti.

But a lot of people donate to charities, does that excuse all the ugly things totti made on the field? Spitting, jumping on a german (to mention only the youngest facts) aren't an example for the youth.

Totti is very talented but he isn't a nice guy.

Face it.

Youth? He'a already 28 man.

And no matter how much Totti donates to charity, my perspective on him will never change, a total f*****.

I think he meant Totti's behaviours are not a good example for young players.

my point is that they "abuse" the act, they mostly anounce so that people will say " oh how a good man he is" etc.. I'm sure they don't give a fvck about those poor kids.u know what i mean?
I agree.... annoucing that he's giving 2k seems like it's all for publicity and that he's just showing off. However, he is an example to many young fans and this is good to set an example to younger fans.

There are two sides to it depening on what angle your look from/to.

In the end, the kids get the help and that's really what matters.

Personally, I don't think his publicized charity should be condomned or celebrated. "To each his own."

sure the children will get the help in the end.but like I said, he abused the "act" for the public image.and not the children
and I agree that he should be an aexample for the youth.but not this way, he could be a good exaple on the pitch if he wants too.
Don't get me wrong, but I am against this things because of my religion.and because I agree with the idea (of the religion).

You are all being unduly harsh on Totti. Totti is known for giving LOADS of cash to several charities. He is one of the most involved players in the serie A, and tries to do this in the most discreet way, as his entering hospitals incognito to visit seriously ill children testifies.

I really doubt that he tried to use his auctioning that shirt as a publicity stunt, as it's obvious that this would have only produced sarcastic comments, as it has, rather than marks of appreciation.

Of course its a publicity stunt. Loads and loads of people give money to charities all the time, and nobody hears of it. Those people who deliberately make it known that they have donated are clearly wishing to improve other people's opinions of themselves, ie become more popular.
