We could play a 4-3-3 and it would allow us to play some free flowing footie and have great squad depth so we could compete with the other big clubs. But we have so many good players, it would be a waste for them to be on the bench so a 4-4-2 is definetly going to be used.

sure but that goes for 4-3-3 as well, it would be a mistake to be predictable. Capello was with his 4-4-2 but he had a much better team.
even Ajax abandon their 4-3-3 to play something else once in a while

thanx white rabbit, at last I have found a member who isn't scared to take the game onto our opponents half. We do have a strong attack and for now a shaky defence, it would be very wrong to sit back and let our defenders be put under pressure. Nobody can score from their own half, as for counter football for that we have Tiago who is used to these tactics and is excellent in disrupting our opponents play. We are likely to controll 75% of our games, most of the time we are looking for a way to crack down their defence, you'll find that easier when you have 3 up front.

i dont see buffon going out of the box. at least not as far as those dumasses. plus i dont see the fus about beckham goal I can score from that for if I played in a stadium as small as that

Yes you are. Our defence will probably struggle to cope with 4 at the back, never mind 3.

We also don't have the right type of wide player, except Salihamidzic, to make it work as it would be a waste of Nedved and Camo to give them too much by way of defensive duties.

That would work. I like it. I think as long as we have a destroyer out there than the 4-3-3 works. Nedved and Tiago/Almiron would be more free to move with Nocerino/Zanetti behind them. The key to this though... as is the key to every formation is the destroter. I stand corrected... if this is how we will run the 433 I am a fan.

the way i see it. in 442 the side backs go forward leaving 2 central backs and a definsive midfielder to cover. this is very good if you have the likes if cannavaro or thuram in the center.
but in 3-5-2 all three central backs will stey back all the time plus the support of the definsive midfielder. also in 3-5-2 we will have much better control of the game. the only drawback for it is that 3-5-2 is not as flexible as 4-4-2 i.e. you dont have as much options if you want to change the ganeplan

as for the wide player i see sali and chellini will do the job. neddy and camo can play very well as an attacking midfielders.

for me a 4-4-2 diamond is the best as it can be easily converted to 4-3-3 but with our defense one defensive midfielder wont be enough. as for the straight 4-4-2 it isolates the midfield from the attack unless one of the strikers is used as a link (zlatan's job when cappelo was in charge) and we dont want that style dont we

People who associate the 433 with "Free" football are very silly. Free football isn't formation based. It is a philosophy. The 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 can be just as "Free". I think people only see the 4-4-2 as what it was under Capello and nothing more. A 4-3-3 can be defensive too. The problem I have is that our coach is attack minded. And unless we field a destroyer in the midfield, I think we will get eaten alive in Calcio with our defence.

I think the best way to lineup is the way I have it in my avatar... but the 433 version mentioned above would work. But, I do fear Nedved, Tiago, and/or Almiron getting over zealous in attack and opening up the central midfield which I guess could happen in any formation.

In 4-4-2 only one full back goes forward at a time in general, which should leave 4 players deep at any time.

I just don't like 3 at the back, very few teams try it and fewer make it work. I just can see us managing to do anything with that formation.

The 3-5-2 is a gimick formation for lesser teams fighting for promotion and relegation. Not for teams with really good players who can be responsible for a lot of space in the midfield. It would be pointless for our team to run it.

I am trying to figure out how we could run a 433 without comprimising one of our superstars and/or still getting good defensive coverage. Face it, the 4-3-3 will not work with this group. Maybe next year, but not this year.

That doesn't make any sense.

If we can get Almiron and Tiago to perform the defensive duties to a higher calibre, this team would create so much havoc for the opposition we face. There's no doubt about it.

And by the way, if we use the 4-4-2, Nedved will be WASTED on the wing again. I don't want that.
