What is 'up and down passing'?
I think he means like North and South passing, forcing the ball which we did try to do.

If it was me, I would probably use this once the season starts:

Buffon

Zebina - Grygera - Andrade - Molinaro

Tiago - Nocerino - Almiron

Camoranesi - Trezeguet - Del Piero

No Chiellini since he probably will be sold.

I liked our team better in the second half when we played 4-4-2. I think we ended up with to many long balls in the first half. Dont think we have enough time to get the 4-3-3 work.

No Nedved?

I know he can't play every week but he would be in my first team.

I think we have time to make it work. We've actually already experimented with it and I believe we should continue doing that because I don't think a straight four midfield with Tiago and Almiron in the center have enough steel. And I don't want to drop one of them either.

Nedved could be inserted for Del Piero or in midfield. I want to start him as well but then again I don't like the straight 4-4-2, so it's difficult to say.

I prefer to leave tactics to guys like you, but tell me this...not a midfield of Camoranesi, Tiago, Amiron, Nedved? Ranieri likes the 4-4-2 as much as the 4-3-3.

That would be my prefered option, as I would go 4-4-2.

My only concern about that midfield is that it lacks a naturally defensive player so it may be necessary, for some games, to play either Nocerino or Zanetti to give the defence a bit more protection.

Presumably ADP & Trez as the favoured front 2. With Iaquinta as sub for Ale. How would Palladino fit in? Revert to 4-3-3? But who then drops out of midfield?

Palla could come in in place of either DP or Neddy.

If it is like his time at Chelsea, Ranieri will change tactics so often that everyone will get a chance.

Well, if Tiago and Almiron can give us enough steel in midfield and can handle playing without a defensive midfielder, then I would potentially go with the straight 4-4-2 as well. However, Tiago is not a destroyer and Almiron does not do much in regards to defensive duties, so I'm not sure; we just have to wait and see how they play together. But if we need a destroyer, I'm not willing to drop out one of Tiago or Almiron just to field a player like Zanetti. We bought those two said players to have a major role with this club, so I don't see us benching one of them. And considering that, along with the possibility they don't have the defensive capability to lead us by themselves in Serie A, the only option is to stick a destroyer in there who can provide that defensive solidity while Tiago and Almiron venture forward. This is an issue Ranieri has to address and experiment with.

But as of right now, with our defense as it is, we need a destroyer in there to take the pressure off. Again, we'll just have to see through this next month how Tiago and Almiron will mold together and if they can be solid enough as a unit in the defensive facets of the central midfield role.

That's right, so we could potentially switch between the two formations and deploy Zanetti for the more difficult matches. It would be nice if Tiago and Almiron can mesh together and excel as the two central midfielders; that way we could potentially play good football against the more mediocre sides of Serie A for a change.

and knowing us its unlikely that we wont play a dm regardless of who the manager is :p

I did think the same watching the game today, but then again maybe they just need some time to settle in. It's nice we have different options but at some point Ranieri have to decide which one to go with and stick with it. I does seem like he prefers the 4-3-3. Do anyone know which formation he prefered in Parma, Chelsea etc??

i think he liked the 4-3-3 because i remeber hasselbaink up there alot by himself, which i personally dont like because if we play milan or roma they will play a 4-4-1-1 and that will dominate us too much in midfield. and on the wings we'll get banged.
