How much better though?
I'm sure there were a lot of (average) midfielders in Serie A alone that were better than Arthur last year. Does that mean we consider all of those players to be an upgrade on our current midfield?
It just reeks of desperation and a lack of vision at this point.
Let's just buy some bang average jabroni's to 'strengthen' other areas, meanwhile those said positions are being 'strengthened' with players who are either past their prime or injury prone.
A vicious cycle that we can't quite get out of for the past 4 seasons.
I mean, the fact of the matter is that we're spending a lot of money on Chiesa/Vlahovic this summer. Those commitments cannot be avoided.
Yes, we are reducing wages and yes we are looking to "retooling" if you would but that takes time. For the first time in a LONG time the Juventus academy is producing talents and while some are stepping up there still is a lot of waiting involved at some positions. I agree with a lot of supporters that we must rely more on these academy products to be the 4th and 5th midfield options instead of older veterans or middle of the road players. And I think once we clear players like Arthur and Rabiot and Ramsey from the wage bill, youth we be relied on more to be those 4th and 5th man up.
Even at 5-7m wages, a player on a free on a SHORT contract is financially punting the responsibility of filling their position to another year and another window. And while not ideal, financially punting purchasing a LB for another year does have some reasons.
First, we must rearm on the wings. Even if we dislike players like Bernardeschi, we still need bodies on the squad to play positions if injuries occur and during the heavy fixutre congestion. Also, we must rearm on the wings for players that fit Vlahovic as the CF. Dybala and Bernardeschi need replacing. Kulusevski needs replacing. Cuadradro is getting old and will need replacing. Punting filling those positions has benefits because a player on a free with 7m wages is a 14m financial windfall for two years. A young LB at 20m transfer fee and 3m wages for is probably more than that price.
The team is in a horrible state due to the building of Paratici and we must correct it but we cannot fill every need and fix every issue in one year. We've started the process and removing high wage earners off our books has helped the process. But there is still time to go on it. Next year with thankfully be a very good year for cleaning up the previous regimes squadbuilding. Ramsey wages, Sandro wages, Rabiot wages are all gone. That is a 21-25m ANNUAL amount of cash freed up. The year after we see Szczesny, Rugani, and Bonucci wages gone. I'd assume none of them get extensions, MAYBE Bonucci on lower wages like how we did with Chiellini.
It is a process and while we all sees the holes and issues on the team, frankly we are not financially able to properly fix and fill every hole instantly. And while it may not be the preferred option, some positions will need to be temporary fixes at a cheaper cost WHILE (very key) not losing the club's competitive edge or getting worse. Is Emerson the PREFERRED option to fix our LB issue for the next five years? Obviously no. Is a CB like Acerbi the PREFERRED option to get depth at CB for the next five years? Clearly no. But these are stopgap solutions that are cheap and have some potential to not be a complete mistake while letting us fix and fill other positions immediately.
And we aren't even into the transfer window yet. Nobody thought Vlahovic was coming in January. Nobody could've prayed Ramsey would be sent to Rangers. Let's judge and commiserate more when it is August and the window is near closed. Time will tell.
