Given that Real Madrid don’t have any box to box midfielders but have 3 playmakers instead, it is kind of relevant.

Anyway, we played second half with two injured players (key to the midfield balance) and then a man down, but we'll just ignore this for argument's sake.

I reckon we would have lost the midfield battle regardless of our injuries or not. We have a history of pressing and then running out of steam in Europe.

Creative midfield is by far the most important aspect. When Real Madrid steamrolled our midfield in the second half in Cardiff, that had nothing to do with their bench, Ronaldo or Ramos. That had everything to do with Modric, Isco and Kroos.


Pogba was never good defensively, but his ability to link midfield with attack is something that we still haven’t replaced. We need a player like Modric or Iniesta who can link midfield to attack. If we don’t get one then we will continue to fail at the last hurdle in the Champions League.

Modric played when Benitez was heading that team into doom. when Zidane came and benched isco for Casemiro, Real started kicking everyones ass. when Casemiro didnt play vs Bayern this season, they almost went home

Real selling Makelele is another good example on how it goes when you replace defensive stability with technical ability. It's pretty clear you need to have both and finding the right balance is difficult.

Also just buying technical creative midfielders won't make you suddenly play tiki-taka.
