MADRID (AFP) - Tottenham's new manager Juande Ramos has his eye on Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas for next season, and the club is ready to pay a record 40 million euros for the Spanish international, a Spanish newspaper said Thursday.

"Juande wants Casillas," headlined the newspaper El Mundo in its sports section.

Despite struggling in the Premier League this season, Tottenham has the money, the daily said.

The club offered the Spanish former Sevilla manager a deal worth six million euros a season to take over from Martin Jol, who was sacked last month, and is ready to pay Casillas seven million euros a year, El Mundo said.

A transfer fee of 40 million euros (58 million dollars, 29 million pounds) would make Casillas the costliest keeper in football history, alongside Italy's Gianluigi Buffon, who went from Parma to Juventus for the same amount in 2001.

But El Mundo said Casillas -- nicknamed "Saint Iker" by Real fans for his miraculous saves -- renewed his contract with the club two years ago after rejecting a move to Manchester United.

Casillas, 26, who has made 72 appearances for his country, is under contract with the Madrid club until 2011. Freeing him from the contract would cost any club 60 million euros, the sports newspaper Marca said.

Last weekend, Ramos took Spurs to only its second Premier League victory of the season when it thrashed Wigan 4-0 at White Hart Lane.

I dont see Casillas moving to Spurs. He could end in the EPL,but id be very surprised if it wasnt at one of the big 4.Manchester United and Chelsea come into my mind at once.A swap deal involving Cech-Casillas cannot be ruled out,nor can the possiblity of Ferguson swooping in on Casillas with his red face be ignored. As good as hes' been for the wanks,Van Der Saar isnt getting any younger.

Casillas Will Stay With Madrid For Life - Balboa

Javier Balboa has dismissed talk that Iker Casillas could be tempted to leave Real Madrid and believes that the keeper will remain at the Bernabéu for the rest of his career.

The youngster was asked about the tenuous story linking Los Merengues' custodian with a proposed mega offer from Tottenham and he did not believe a word of it.

El Mundo ran the report, that was light on facts, claiming that Juande Ramos wants to spend €40m to take Casillas to north London as part of his rebuilding programme.

"Casillas will stay here for life and I think that he is one of the icons of the club and one of the best goalkeepers in the world," Balboa said.

"I do not believe that he would ever want to leave the club he sees as home."

Balboa then explained that he and Pepe had made up after their spat on the training ground last week, and put it down to a heat of the moment incident.

"It was something that happens from time-to-time in training, a rush of blood to the head, as much my fault as Pepe's," he continued.

"We have talked about it and solved everything and there is no problem at all now."

In Madrid's last six games, Balboa has appeared four times, albeit briefly, and that has seen his confidence rise, although he knows things could change in the winter transfer window.

"The truth is that since the last time I spoke to the press my luck has changed. Schuster is playing me in more games and in December were are to re-examine my situation," he explained.

"Until then I will continue to work hard."

new challenge? that's what you say when you go from betis to rm. noone goes from rm to tottenham when they're on the first team.
Well, who guessed Beckham would go all that distance? You may tell me he was not a starter and he is older, but my point is that there is nothing called certainty in football transfers.

first of all beckham was in no way essential or even important to the team. in fact he was unwanted, especially by capello who froze him out of the squad also. in any event he was already a journeyman by that time having gone to spain. compare that to going from manu to zaragoza in the first place, thats what this would be for casillas.

btw it seems like Im just too lazy to type in uppercase anymore. I blame it on bes.

Beckham was not looking for a football challenge more than he was looking for a financial one.

Well, my point is that we don't have any absolute certainty that Casillas would refuse such a move. I don't think he'll leave Real too but I'd love to see how they may deal with his departure.

Casillas: I'll See Out My Contract With Madrid

Iker Casillas has declared himself pleased enough by the (alleged) interest of Tottenham Hotspur but, needless to say, has opted to say thanks but no thanks to his London suitors...

Speaking for the Spanish international side's training base, Iker Casillas has broken his silence over the alleged interest of Premiership outfit Tottenham Hotspur.

The Real Madrid number one told the media, "It's important to hear news like this, as things of this nature that are published let us players know that we're doing well," he began.

"But what is clear is that I will fulfill my contract. I've been here for eight years, and it would be very difficult to me.

"How am I going to leave if I have my family, my friends and my team here in Madrid?"

Casillas, a product of the Bernabeu youth system, is under contract until 2011, by which time he'll be 30 years old.

For now, though, he's happy where he is.

"I don't like saying every day that I'm with Madrid," he insisted, brushing aside suggestions of a 40 million euro offer from Juande Ramos' Spurs.

At the moment, Jerzy Dudek serves as understudy to Casillas for the club side, while Pepe Reina does so for Spain.
