Most of the (recent) players in that list are average when they came (I say when they came because of Pep), with the exception of Mendieta (and perhaps De La Pena, but he has underperformed in overall in his career regardless of his talent) who came with the rep of a top player and was ruined by injuries. Its like La Liga would sign the riff raffs of Serie A, and then deem all italian players worthless to sign henceforth due to those players quality.

You know, another team I miss watching is Celta Vigo when they had Mostovoi. That guy was sick nasty.

What these spanish players have in common is not their passport, but virtually all of them being average journeyman players (see how all of them except to two cases in 60-70s, played basically just 1-2 season at most).

Serie A has had lots of foreign players like that. Its been more highlighted in Spains case because virtually no spanish player of quality ever comes to Italy (and italians in Spain has been the same until just recent cases), and them being a big nation, this so called trend of flops is highlighted more (while its just players being the limited so-so players they are).


Yeah Celta was real fun to watch with Mostovoi (technically brilliant), Karpin and Revivo. Back in ze day when spanish middle teams were more then just punching bags.

Well Osman already answered what I was thinking, Andy. Bottom line is, 90% of those Spanish players were average and those that weren't, came at the decline of their careers. Would anyone dare to say Spanish players flop in Italy, if we were talking about a young prospecting striker like Torres? (what am I saying, I'm certain there we'd find a few)

Fact is Silva would walk into the first 11 of any Serie A team. Sad thing is, he'll probably avoid our league as the plague, if he decides to leave La Liga.

Players like Villa, Torres, Xavi, Iniesta, Silva, Alonso and Fabregas would probably do very well in Italy and most probably would walk into any Serie A team's first 11. To say you wouldn't want them just because other players of the same nationality haven't done well in the Serie A, is just daft and unjustified.

To say you wouldn't want them just because other players of the same nationality haven't done well in the Serie A, is just daft and unjustified.

It really don't matter where a player is from. If he's young, talented and motivated, he'll adapt anywhere. Some countries may suit some players better, but all that can be overcome if the head is in the right place.

We're talking about the tactical aspect, B, not lifestyle but that also has a significant aspect in all of it. Some people tend to believe Spanish players flunk in Italy because of it's high tactical level.

Great points well made, only thing against your argument is that they are Spanish, and the Spanish, much like the Welsh, just don't perform in Italy.
