Eh to be fair, some of them aren't really the same generation; Mata only has become a star player in the last couple of years, joaquin is past it, Silva also only became world class in the last couple of years. I don't think Mata was even a regular starter until after Villa left

He was a regular starter Henry, but only recently, as in the past 2-3 years he's been the Mata we all know now. Joaquin was indeed past it, they had some poor coaches too(Koeman comes to mind), there was a lot of instability, they faced financial difficulties and they never had a good defense.
