Barcelona's victory at Osasuna saw them move eight points clear at the top of the table after second-placed Real Madrid were held to a draw at rejuvenated Valencia.
It was not a classic, but Barcelona will cherish the three points that they won in El Sadar as Samuel Eto'o's single goal was enough to give the Catalans a 1-0 victory over Osasuna.
Víctor Valdés was in fine form between the sticks for Barça, but Andrés Iniesta could have earned himself a starting place for the Champions League clash with Chelsea on Tuesday after a great attacking display.
However, it was Eto'o who scored the vital goal six minutes before the break as he was picked out by Deco before driving a diagonal shot beyond the reach of Juantxo Elía in the Osasuna goal and into the far side of the net via the post.
Valencia look like a different side afrter the departure of Claudio Ranieri as caretaker boss, Antonio López, has given the team a new lease of life after reintroducing the quick passing game that brought them success last season.
Pablo Aimar's long-distance strike was cancelled about by a piece of superb individual skill from Ronaldo as Los Ché drew 1-1 with Madrid in Mestalla.
Only 13 minutes were gone when Aimar picked up the ball just outside the penalty and he hammered it past the dive of Iker Casillas to give the home side the lead.
Just before the half-hour mark, Vanderlei Luxemburgo's side equalised when Ronaldo answered all his critics with a quality goal as he tapped home from close range after dazzling Santi Cañizares with some quick footwork to round the keeper leaving himself with an open goal.
Atlético Madrid stayed in eighth place, but they looked to be back to their best as they defeated Sevilla 3-0 in El Calderón, thanks in large part to a fine display by Antonio López.
The Atléti midfielder's cross was headed home by Salva after 15 minutes to open the scoring for the home side, before his free-kick was controlled and rolled past the keeper by Fernando Torres seven minutes before the break.
But López saved the best goal of the night for himself as in the 42nd minute he clipped the ball away from the approaching Esteban before performing a stunning scissor-kick to send the ball back past the keeper and into the far corner of the net.
