La Liga Saturday Wrap: Barcelona Take A Step Nearer The Title
3/6/2005 12:37:00 AM
Barcelona's victory at Osasuna saw them move eight points clear at the top of the table after second-placed Real Madrid were held to a draw at rejuvenated Valencia.
It was not a classic, but Barcelona will cherish the three points that they won in El Sadar as Samuel Eto'o's single goal was enough to give the Catalans a 1-0 victory over Osasuna.

Víctor Valdés was in fine form between the sticks for Barça, but Andrés Iniesta could have earned himself a starting place for the Champions League clash with Chelsea on Tuesday after a great attacking display.

However, it was Eto'o who scored the vital goal six minutes before the break as he was picked out by Deco before driving a diagonal shot beyond the reach of Juantxo Elía in the Osasuna goal and into the far side of the net via the post.

Valencia look like a different side afrter the departure of Claudio Ranieri as caretaker boss, Antonio López, has given the team a new lease of life after reintroducing the quick passing game that brought them success last season.

Pablo Aimar's long-distance strike was cancelled about by a piece of superb individual skill from Ronaldo as Los Ché drew 1-1 with Madrid in Mestalla.

Only 13 minutes were gone when Aimar picked up the ball just outside the penalty and he hammered it past the dive of Iker Casillas to give the home side the lead.

Just before the half-hour mark, Vanderlei Luxemburgo's side equalised when Ronaldo answered all his critics with a quality goal as he tapped home from close range after dazzling Santi Cañizares with some quick footwork to round the keeper leaving himself with an open goal.

Atlético Madrid stayed in eighth place, but they looked to be back to their best as they defeated Sevilla 3-0 in El Calderón, thanks in large part to a fine display by Antonio López.

The Atléti midfielder's cross was headed home by Salva after 15 minutes to open the scoring for the home side, before his free-kick was controlled and rolled past the keeper by Fernando Torres seven minutes before the break.

But López saved the best goal of the night for himself as in the 42nd minute he clipped the ball away from the approaching Esteban before performing a stunning scissor-kick to send the ball back past the keeper and into the far corner of the net.

Changes to the first choice eleven are possible given the Basques questionable away form, if only to give some of the mentally drained Barcelona stars time to reclaim inner sanctity after the massive disappointment of defeat to Chelsea.

Real Madrid find themselves in a similar situation regarding state of mind, as being dumped out of Europe at the Delle Alpi after winning the first leg for the second time in three years has clearly been difficult for all at the Bernabeu to swallow. Neighbours Getafe are certainly capable of troubling the Merengues, if there minds are still on the Bianconeri disaster.

Valencia will look to continue their pretty dramatic return to form and serenity in one of the standout fixtures of the weekend at the Vicente Calderon. Atletico Madrid gained some much needed self-belief in a 3-0 win over high-flying Sevilla last weekend, but it will be tough to make it two in two against a rejuvenated Ches. Sevilla themselves must return to winning ways after that setback if they intend to fight for a CL berth which have become hot property, when they host Real Zaragoza.

Struggling Osasuna welcome plucky Levante to Pamplona after a bad run, while bottom club Mallorca visit a Santander side that a good sequence ended at Zaragoza in the last round. Down south, and despite a recent defeat in a lacklustre encounter at the Riazor, Malaga have enjoyed a pretty impressive lift in the La Liga standings, but will be severely tested when cannon footed Assuncao and his Real Betis colleagues drop in at La Rosaleda. Deportivo will be confident of building on that Riazor win when they go to Albacete, just as Irureta seems to be changing his mind about his summer exit from Galicia on a weekly basis.

Up north in the picturesque haven that is San Sebastian, Real Sociedad continue to regain some semblance of stability despite losing to Cuper’s lowly Mallorca last week. The home form is getting better – something that has to be maintained after repeated defeats on the road. Numancia represents a good opportunity to accrue more points for the Anoeta boys.

In another potential entertainer, the impressively pragmatic Espanyol are bound for El Madrigal to tame the lions of Villarreal. The Catalans are in direct competition for what looks like two available Champions League spots. This encounter could end up meaning millions gained or missed come May, and there’s bound to be goals. What more could you want?

I'd love to watch Barca-Bilbao. ANyone with streams?

Great goal by Giuly. Nicely set up by Ronaldinho and Giuly's finish was as emphatic as they come.

60' Barcelona are really playing very lethargically.. it's just as well that Athletic aren't pushing them too hard, as it seems the Chelsea match has drained the Catalan's energy reserves.

They really weren't very good but that is understandable having played six games in the last three weeks including the Stamford Bridge thriller. Some of the ever presents such as Puyol and Xavi could really use a rest.

I'd have preffered Chelski to go out as it would have meant one less English team. But bottom line, Chelski's in Barca's out. Live with it.

Now I'd preffer Barca to win the Liga, not the Ex-Galacticos. This reaction against Bilbao was good. 10 games to go, currently 11 points above the other guys, could be back to 8 at the end of the day, but whatever, all good if they can sustain till the end.

Barca's fans have sufferred for too long. Please God let them get a trophy this season.

and regarding chelsea win , if rickard knew how to play , if he had the experience , he knew that you must defend and play on counter attacks not to attack and make the offside trap near the center of the field , if he done this barca would have won I AM SHURE OF THIS:(

That Barca team like most Spanish isn't built to sit back and defend.

Valencia set for Italian clearout Friday 11 March, 2005

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Valencia’s Italian contingent look set for summer moves after the recent sacking of Claudio Ranieri.

The Italian tactician brought in Stefano Fiore, Bernardo Corradi, Emiliano Moretti and Marco Di Vaio (pictured) at the start of this term, but their futures at the Mestalla are now in doubt.

Reports in Spain suggest that the four former Serie A stars don’t feature in the plans of new boss Antonio Lopez.

He is understood to have authorised the club to look for potential buyers at the end of the season.

Midfielder Fiore has been associated with Fiorentina and Inter in the last six months, after his move from Lazio.

Corradi, who also left the Olimpico in the summer, is a possible Fiorentina target even if Tottenham are also keen.

Di Vaio, a £7m signing from Juventus, is looking for an exit and Inter are apparently keen. He could join the Nerazzurri on loan.

While there should be some interest in Moretti, a promising left-back, given that he impressed at Under-21 level prior to his Spanish switch
