This website suggests this as a solution, has anyone tried it or know if it would work?

What is the best alternative to stream?
best alternative to sopcast is torrentstream/acestream imo. Just make sure you install the latest version of acestream as the previous one (2.0) isn't compatible with the streams for the latest gen (3.0).
you can find more info on wiziwig (software section)

NOTE: TorrentStream is NOT the same as StreamTorrent. TS is now called Acestream but just in case so you don't confuse the two.

yep, all the time. It's become even more relevant than sopcast since the latter started blocking streams for most european championships, including the CL (I think Serie A and La Liga are the only major leagues where games aren't being blocked yet). Sopcast is very susceptible to this as they have a centralized server (which is why it's so easy to load the stream and then have smooth playback in the first place). A torrent-based software like Acestream doesn't have this problem but might take 5-10 min till the stream stabilizes, so it may be a good idea to connect a little earlier.

when you instal acestream, make sure you UNCHECK the browser plug-in option (it's one of the options in the default instal settings) as those would end up displaying some russian porn adds or whatever as you browse later on :D

I installed acestream and tried several times to stream matches, but in vain!
after 20-30 mins and buffering stands still at 30%!!!

    What could be wrong?

Could be a matter of a bad stream, which can be eliminated as option by trying other streams instead. All in all - not all streams are created equal :D

If this persists with all streams, then it must be a more central problem - e.g. firewall and/or port blocking, including peer-to-peer blocking software like PeerBlock, for example. In that case you would have to unblock acestream or shut-down peerblock.
It could also be a matter of not properly uninstalling an older version before installing the new one. More on how to get the most out of acestream you can find here:

I haven't figured out how to export the stream. I'm running Sopcast 0.8.5.
OK well I don't know if it's the player bugging for you but try opening Sopcast as usual but as soon as the stream has started click the speaker icon to disable its sound.

Then you open VLC and open network stream. Enter this address:

    http://localhost:8902/tv.asf

Then you should be able to view the stream in VLC. :)

You can also do this from terminal of course, I've made a very simple script to do this. If you can't the this to work we can try the script instead. :)
