Sure he can! Check Fiora's matches from this season. He played a left forward with Gila in centre and Cerci at the right. When Gilardino was injured, Jovetić was moved to center.

lol Pepe played in CM position vs. napoli and? It's not his natural position, he played there just because of Vargas poor form or injury! His natural position AM/CF/SS- Vargas - Jovetic - Cerci and Gilardino up front

Re-watched the game. I don't think Pepe did too bad as as a CM, regardless of the goal. Always made himself available to receive a pass and generally hit his passes.

I think it was easier for him to get on the ball than Juve's other midfielders, especially in the first half, because Napoli were more worried about Pirlo and Vidal - especially Pirlo - so had decided to focus more on denying them space.

Mazzarri obviously didn't expect Pepe to run half the length of the pitch and score.
