Everyone seems to be winning the league in their first season over here. I've been doing terrible, finished the first season 8th! And the following season 2nd. Now just started 3rd season.

Here's my current team:

In my first season i finished 4th, which i was happy with considering i spent most of the season in a intertoto cup place finish(8th place), just started second season, am fourth after 2 games, drew my first one 2-2 with Catania, then beat Reggina 3 or 4-0. Won 6-2 on aggregate in the CL premliminery's against Sparta Prague.

Why does my team constantly under perform?

Also, how do i get a player to stop worrying about "too much competition for a place" when I play him almost during all games?

Try offering him an improved contract and if he doesn't accept or if that doesn't work, then try selling a player you don't use often that plays on the same position as the guy that keeps complaining.

I don't know if you already tried switching them from side (if you play with two strikers), maybe train them on finishing and shooting and if that doesn't work, you can always cheat a bit by adding a new manager to the next team you will face, then making sure your team wins it and your strikers score some goals in that match which might give them the confidence they lacked.
But that is the last option of course
