Deschamps: “Maximum concentration”
“In contrast to the game against Napoli we have Trezeguet, Nedved and Kovac back with us, although Marchionni, Giannichedda and Boumsong, along with Tudor and Piccolo, have not recovered in time”. Good news for Didier Deschamps who welcomes back three key players for the clash with Pescara.
It’s the centre of defence that has been hit hardest by injury, especially after Legrottaglie’s shoulder operation, so Chiellini will step into the breach once more on Saturday to partner Kovac at the back. “It’s not his natural position – explained Deschamps – but he’s played there in the past and he’s doing a good job at the moment. I don’t see any reason to change things round. Zebina? He hasn’t played a full game for a long time now and it’s not easy to get back match rhythm straight away”. Moving away from defence, it was only natural that he mention the progress of Claudio Marchisio, whose impressive performances against Brescia and Napoli have attracted the interest of fans and critics alike. “He already showed his abilities during the pre-season programme. He’s played very well on two occasions now and he will continue to be very useful to the team in the future. He now faces his biggest challenge yet: he mustn’t change his attitude but he must also keep growing as a player. He has a great future ahead of him”. The meeting with Pescara must be approached with the same spirit as the last two games. “It won’t be easy, the context is different and there is always the risk of losing concentration. Knowing our strengths, it’s tempting for the players to think they will score sooner or later, but they’re mistaken. Against Frosinone, for example, we put ourselves at risk by being slow and predictable, while they were focused and aggressive; if we play like that we give the opposition more hope. This is why it’s important to prepare well for these games, because there are always three points on offer. Pescara come here on the back of two positive results. They showed a lot of character in their last game, coming back from 2-0 down to salvage a point with just ten men. They’re a little behind in the standings, but in any case they are to be respected and it’s up to us to take to the field with the right competitive attitude”.
