No it was a pretty strict 4-3-3. Everyone nailed to their position and passing sideways and backwards until Miretti came on.
Did we try to get them to attack us to counter the mighty Samp? Was that the overly defensive game plan where we waste an hour and Max tries to win 1-0 with subs?

Well since it was a 4-5-1 in defence and not 4-4-2, I don't think Samp got very deep in our final 3rd. So there were not many opportunities to launch counters when Samp had many players too far forward.

It was an extremely stale match like the animated Simpsons football gif basically. Two teams passing aimlessly at midfield.

The problem with a 4-3-3 and flank wingers like Kostic and Cuadrado who do not cut in, is you leave the spaces there for the mezzali but if they are Rabiot and McKennie then you just do nothing and continue passing backwards. So that's basically what we did.

So when Miretti came in to play LCM, he immediately started taking that space between Vlahovic and the LW. And he immediately started hitting vertical passes. So then the difference in quality that a B2B makes becomes immediately evident and that's why we are purchasing a backup #9.

Of course we could have just tried a more aggressive press and counter press to turn them over and score that way but we know that will never happen. Our fullbacks close so slowly on the wings when there is literally one place for Samp to hit a pass. Just totally slow and disjointed shit as usual.
