Platini made a promise to the then Novara Club President or possibly the Mayor of Novara, back in 2010, that were the club to get promoted he would come and watch a game. I read somewhere that Platini was known to have commented on the great cross-boarder relationship between France and the Piedmont region. So I guess this game was the obvious choice given his ties to both teams.

Platini's grandfather is from a twon very close to Novara and Platini promised Novara president that one day he will attend a match at their stadium if they return to the higher ranks. Platini of course chose their encounter with Juventus for this occasion.
