Better performance from Juve in some ways, even if there were still plenty of problems.

Unlike previous games, pretty much all Juve's issues were individual rather than collective or tactical.

Juve comfortable with the lead until Chiellini lost Britos for the goal. And Napoli's chances late on came from errors from Ogbonna and Bonucci, rather than anything to do with the organisation of the defence/team more generally.

The attacking play in the first half showed more signs of several Juve players working to manipulate space and to try and exploit it. There had been a lack of any signs of a collective attacking plan in some recent Juve games. As little as Tevez and Llorente contributed with the ball in the game, I thought they moved properly in the first half and that gave Juve space to work in and set up attacks.

There were far fewer instances of Juve getting into trouble due to over-committing and leaving themselves exposed. The times Juve really got in trouble on the break were when the ball was stupidly given away and there was inevitably going to be problems after that.

Thought it was a mistake from Benitez to not start Mertens on the left wing. Because Napoli had Britos and De Guzman on the left, there was no danger of Juve being stretched wide on that side and so a key weakness of 4-3-1-2 wasn't likely to be exposed. We saw how quckly Mertens made a difference when he came on and how Juve felt they had to adjust to get proper cover on that flank. De Guzman could have played is Ghoulam was at left-back, but without him it was a side that offered little to worry Juve.

Hamsik was also put in a weird nothingy position we Juve had the ball. He wasn't high enough up to put pressure on Pirlo, but nor was he deeper enough to engage Juve's other midifelders and prevent Napoli being outnumbers in that area of the pitch.

Thought the referee was very kind to Juve.
I agree with your analysis but don't you think that Hamsik wasn't in reach of Pirlo and was left in no man's land simply because of the extra deep role that Pirlo plays in this formation? I see him often between the central defenders.

It was another so-so showing for the 4-3-1-2 in my eyes. There really is no width at all. It's so incredibly risky for a fullback to push up and provide the width when you have Pirlo as the DM who can't cover any ground. We almost got caught a few times in the first half when they tried to push up. Especially Evra. You can see he wants to take all that space in front of him but he's hesitant. I see him stop and start a lot.

Tevez doesn't look as comfortable in this formation either. He can't drop into midfield and collect the ball since all our CMs are there. Everything is really clumsy and we don't have the technical ability to play such quick, short passes in these extremely tight areas we put ourselves into. I'm happy Allegri went to the 3-5-2 at the end. Mertens and Gabbiadini can't be allowed to cut inside. I hope he's working on something else though.

After seeing Morata's assist I can't help but wonder if he can play LW and Tevez can stay in the middle. Giovinco/Pereyra/Coman on the right.

Quite possibly, as Pirlo is going very deep at times.

But if Hamsik wasn't going to go and mark Pirlo, he should then have dropped deep enough to help Lopez and Gargano against Juve's other midfielders.

The more I see Benitez, there more I think he is regressing tactically.

Allegri: 'Juve deserved victory'
By Football Italia staff

Max Allegri blasted Aurelio De Laurentiis for “stirring up trouble” after Juventus beat Napoli 3-1 in “recompense for Doha.”

President Aurelio De Laurentiis ranted on Twitter at the second goal, which had some players offside, but Allegri was unimpressed.

It makes me smile,:D because if we start protesting at refereeing decisions then it’ll be chaos. When they go against us, everyone is happy, but when they go in our favour it’s controversy,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

In that case, shall we complain about the two incidents that went against us with Sampdoria? Mistakes happen, they are made by Coaches, players and Presidents, so why not referees? Why do we want to stir up controversy after a great game?

It’s disappointing to see someone trying to stir up trouble after such a wonderful night of football. Unfortunately this is football in Italy, as nobody accepts defeat or decisions.

“If we had to drop referees every time they made one mistake, there’d be nobody left. Are we meant to be the referees instead?”

(Think hes officially over the Muntari ghost goal!)

The Bianconeri hadn’t won at the San Paolo since September 2000, but the new Coach broke that taboo.

These sides had met in Doha only three weeks ago, Napoli fighting back twice from a goal down for 2-2 in extra time, eventually winning the Super Cup on penalties.

Maybe I have a good tradition here. If I remember right my Milan hadn’t won here for 24 years...he smiled.:D

Aside from that goal, tonight we played better than Napoli and fully deserved the victory. This was like a recompense for what we lost in Doha, as then we conceded at the last minute with a ricochet that fell to Higuain. This time it went the other way.

We have many things to improve, such as the pace of the game and the speed of passing, but it was a struggle and I’m pleased we were able to win out. Recently we had dropped leads, but this time we fought back and reacted.

“In order to win we must learn to sacrifice, suffer and fight. We should also defend a certain way and read moments in the game. That is where we must work and improve. As a team we are getting better on incidents where we lose the ball in midfield.

“Juventus won the Scudetto three years in a row, but that certainly does not mean a fourth is to be taken for granted.”
Great words from Mister.
Good to hear that he knows we need to improve.

Great victory!!!!
Soooooo important and sweet!!!
Infront of 50k fans, without our own, against all the haters,in the stadium we haven't won for 14 years....BIG FUCKING WIN!!

YESSSS!!!!

Yeah,not a great performance,but what a fight!!! what a team of warriors!!!

Forza Juve!!
