Alex snubs Zeman feud Friday 12 November, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zdenek Zeman has spent the last several years insulting him in public, but Alex Del Piero insists he won’t use Sunday’s clash as revenge.

“I have nothing personal against Zeman,” assured the Juventus captain. “As far as I am concerned, this is a game like any other.”

The Lecce Coach sparked controversy when he told newspapers he was amazed at how muscular Juve stars Gianluca Vialli and Del Piero had become in a short period of time.

The comments saw Vialli sue, while the Turin public prosecutor began a long-running investigation into the club’s medical facilities. The trial is still going on to this day with players such as Del Piero and Zinedine Zidane called in to testify.

“I’ve no intention nor need to wreak vengeance on Zeman,” he added. “I only hope it’s an entertaining game for the fans, as both teams always play to win.”

Del Piero was also an example of humility when asked his feelings at not being in the 50-man shortlist for the prestigious Balon d’Or.

“It was entirely predictable, because between Euro 2004, my injury problems and missing out on the Scudetto it was obvious I wouldn’t be a candidate.”

There are nonetheless 14 Serie A players vying to succeed Pavel Nedved as European Player of the Year.

“There are players who have won trophies, such as Deco with the Champions’ League and reaching the Euro 2004 Final,” noted Alex. “There are others like Andriy Shevchenko and Adriano who deserve the title, but Gianluigi Buffon is certainly the best goalkeeper in the world.”

The Bianconeri are already six points clear at the top of the table despite repeatedly rotating the squad and Del Piero is often the one left on the sidelines.

“Fabio Capello always makes good substitutions,” he smiled, “and perhaps he keeps replacing me because it’s brought him luck in the past! I am substituted for a variety of reasons, some tactical and others linked to my fitness. When I’m not on form it’s only right for Capello to take me off.”

Del Piero turned 30 years old this week and was asked to give an appraisal of his career.

“It’s a bit early for that,” laughed the Juventus captain. “I’ll only make that kind of judgement when I hang up my boots.”

.... (rest of coloumn)
I really haven't seen a star with such humility. He speaks as if he is just a youngster being given a first chance at a big club that he has just joined. I like the way he handles journalists and the relaxing way in which he responds to their usually frustrating questions.

Not to mention his reaction when Capello substitutes him: he heads to the bench without a fuss and keep cheering on his mates. Unlike other players who leave the match heading towards the tunnel shouting disgusting words at their coach and refusing to give the captain armband to another player (Totti), or throwing a bottle at the coach (Vieri).

Players with huge egos like Totti, Ronaldo, and Raul should learn a thing or two from him.

----

As for the match itself, it's certainly going to be a difficult match as Lecce have been in great form this season under Zeman even if they have slowed down recently with a draw at Siena and a defeat against Udinese.

We should be careful at Via del Mare as free-scoring Bojinov could punish our defenders if they commited any simple mistakes. Inter's defenders would certainly testify to that after his double against them.

What is wrong with Eurosport. Juventus form is not stuttering!

Stuttering Juve facing Lecce test

Leaders Juventus come up against high-flying Lecce on Sunday aiming to put their stuttering recent form behind them. Slipping to a first loss of the season last weekend at Reggina, Fabio Capello's side were unconvincing as they squeezed past Fiorentina in midweek. Serie A Day 12 LIVE 15:00CET!

Juve have a six-point lead at the top as their rivals AC Milan have faltered but fourth-placed Lecce are the team of the season so far in terms of entertainment and will pose a real threat to Fabio Capello's side.

However, it is words uttered by the southerners' coach Zdenek Zeman six years ago that will be on the mind of many ahead of Sunday's game.

The Czech, who has coached Lazio and AS Roma during his career, became the centre of controversy in 1998 when he raised questions about possible doping in Serie A and said the game should "get out of the pharmacists".

He pointed the finger at Juventus players and his words led to a lengthy investigation into the club, with two officials facing possible jail sentences if found guilty in a Turin court later this year.

Many observers speculated that having made himself an enemy of Juventus, Zeman's coaching career in Serie A was over but after spending time in Serie B he now finds himself in the spotlight again.

Zeman's Lecce, usually playing with a three-pronged strike force, have the best attacking record in Serie A with 24 goals from the opening 11 games. But they have also conceded 20 - a record matched only by AS Roma.

Last Sunday's 4-3 home defeat to Udinese illustrated the strengths and weaknesses of Lecce's approach but they will have to work particularly hard against an unspectacular but superbly efficient Juve team who have conceded just four goals this season and lost once.

OTHER GAMES ON SUNDAY (kick-off 15:00CET)

ATALANTA (20) v BRESCIA (14)

Winless Atalanta coach Andrea Mandorlini might not survive a defeat in this always fiery Lombardian derby.

Both teams are without experienced former Italy international midfielders with Atalanta's Demetrio Albertini injured and Brescia's Luigi Di Biagio suspended.

----

CAGLIARI (9) v INTER MILAN (7)

Cagliari have made a steady return to Serie A and have four wins from six home games and while Inter are unbeaten they can't stop drawing - nine from 11 games leaves them already 13 points behind Juventus.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini's honeymoon spell is over and to add to his problems Argentine midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron is out with a muscle strain and his compatriot Esteban Cambiasso is suspended.

----

FIORENTINA (10) v LIVORNO (8)

Just three points separate seventh place from 16th and the two Tuscan teams are in the middle of that pack.

Fiorentina could feature Christian Rigano as the striker, with the club throughout its rise from Serie C2, has recovered from injury and is line for a place - probably on the bench.

----

LAZIO (12) v BOLOGNA (15)

Lazio coach Domenico Caso is another coming under increased pressure and has to reorganise his whole defence due to injuries and the absence of suspended right-back Massimo Oddo and Portuguese centre-half Fernando Couto.

Lazio have won just once at home this season while Bologna have the same record on the road.

----

AC MILAN (2) v SIENA (18)

Two successive draws are enough to get the media talking about problems at Milan and they looked well short of their best against Roma and Brescia.

Top scorer Andriy Shevchenko should be back in the starting lineup for the champions, having recovered from his muscle injury problems.

----

PALERMO (16) v SAMPDORIA (11)

Sampdoria are away day specialists having picked up three of their four wins this season on the road but they are without their two best players - midfield general Sergio Volpi and lively striker Francesco Flachi.

----

PARMA (17) v CHIEVO VERONA(6)

Parma's win over Reggina has eased the pressure after a poor start to the season but Chievo's league position is no fluke. The Verona side will be without the injured striker Federico Cossato.

----

REGGINA (19) v AS ROMA (13)

Roma defender Christian Panucci has settled his differences with coach Luigi Del Neri and should return to the defence but striker Antonio Cassano remains effectively suspended by the club.

Reggina have hosted Roma four times but have yet to win against them.

----

UDINESE (3) v MESSINA (5)

This would not have appeared an appetising fixture at the start of the season but it certainly is now with Udinese having won 4-3 at Lecce and then 3-0 at Roma in the past week to move into third place.

Messina failed to sparkle in their derby draw with Palermo on Thursday but they enjoy the chance to play on the break away from home.

With the absence of Nedved, I really hope Capello fields Kapo for this match. I think he deserves a start, along with Olivera, and I would love to see how the two would play together. But since Emerson looks likely to be fit, then I would like to see this:

Buffon

Birindelli-Thuram-Cannavaro-Zambrotta

Olivera-Emerson-Blasi-Kapo

Del Piero-Ibrahimovic
emo is injury too, correct me if im wrong :frown:
